groundwork for the team's electronic sign-stealing ploys via a program dubbed "Codebreaker" that was introduced by an intern in the organization in September 2016, The Wall Street Journal is reporting.

According to the WSJ, the Excel-based application designed to decode the opposing catchers' signs was used throughout the 2017 season and for part of 2018 by Astros baseball operations employees and video room staffers both at home and on the road.

Staffers would log the catcher's signs and subsequent pitches into a spreadsheet and "Codebreaker" would determine how the signs related to different pitches. The information would then be communicated to the hitter by a base runner via an intermediary.

Ex-Astros GM Jeff Luhnow told MLB investigators that he remembers the intern's PowerPoint slide about "Codebreaker," but said he thought it would be used to legally decipher signs from previous games, according to the WSJ.

The intern, who currently works as the Astros' senior manager of team operations, told investigators that he assumed Luhnow knew it would be used in live games.

The team's director of advance information, Tom Koch-Weser, also alleges Lunhow knew about the system. According to the WSJ, Koch-Weser told MLB that the former GM would occasionally go to the Astros' video room during road games and make comments like "You guys Codebreaking?"

Rays have shown some interest in Yasiel Puig. Uncertain how serious it is.

Seems a weird fit after the Rays traded for Renfroe. Their OF is set with Meadows, Kiermaier and Renfroe. Not to mention Tsutsugo and Jose Martinez can man the corner spots (although that would be less than ideal).

edit: didn't realize Renfroe was already 28, thought he was younger for some reason

Would have to think he'd want a starting opportunity somewhere, unless he's past that point

If they stay healthy, they can be real dangerous, so maybe he sees an opportunity on a playoff team as a way to regain some trust in him

They are a challenge if She'll recovers his old form. That pitching staff would be fantastic and the offense is better than expected. Still think they are a 90+ win wild card team though

I think Renfroe mashes lefties while Puig struggles. So maybe looking at a platoon if the cost on Puig is low

Having Severino and Cole will be the difference. Yankees offense and bullpen is better but Rays have a better staff.

Cole
Severino
Tanaka
Happ
Montgomery

Vs
Morton
Snell
Glasnow
Yarbrough
McKay

Makes sense. Jose Martinez is the same way in mashing lefties as well while Puig hits righties well.

Martinez should only be a DH/1B he should not see the field

That's true as well He'll probably play a decent bit at first with both of their first basemen lefties

Real question is what #RedSox want. #MNTwins could send Graterol and lesser prospect to #Dodgers, then LAD could flip Graterol and a better prospect to BOS. But some in talks sense that negative media reaction to Verdugo-Graterol return for Betts-Price gave BOS ownership pause.
