I would pick Olympic gold in hockey. More chance of it actually happening for one thing, and it's not like this field isn't Loaded.

And if 44% want to see us win Olympic gold in hockey, doesn't that mean a majority of Americans would rather see a World Cup win? So whats the problem? It's basically a close split between fans. It's like asking a citizen of a city would they rather have their team win a Super Bowl or a World Series.

Also consider the time that this poll is taken - during the Winter Olympics. Take this poll in June and you will see an entirely different result.
This. I like hockey, don't follow it as much as I did in the '90s. I don't care much about soccer at all. I'll pull for team USA in anything on the world stage and I'll be really proud if we win the World Cup b/c you gotta respect the magnitude of the event even if you don't give a crap about the sport but once every 4 years.

Right now it's Olympic time and we wanna win the most important event and kick Canadian hoser arse on their own turf!

US has already won gold in hockey. I'd love to see the US win the World Cup, even though I'm a very passive soccer fan

When I was 23 I didn't give a shite about soccer either, but I'm more sophisticated now, so I do give a shite.

I don't think Americans (in general) would appreciate a World Cup victory (the whole thing, not just winning a game, obviously)

Those of us who have a lot of foreign friends certainly would appreciate the hell out of it.

Heck, if we beat England in the opening match, I'll be insufferable for the remainder of the tourney.

I think you're very wrong about this. Americans always catch fever and get behind our teams on a world stage. This country went wild over the women's soccer world cup win years back w/ Chastain's PK winner. If we advance out of our group, watch America really get behind our team.

I have the emails of too many former neighbors to count, ready for pro-US spam.

If the US were in the finals of the World Cup I wouldn't bother watching. I didn't watch the Bobby Fischer win over Boris Spasy either, although chess is a bit more exciting than soccer.

The U.S. has like a 1% chance of winning the world cup. Might as well go for the more realistic goal.

Soccer is not big in the U.S. so I understand. Soccer will never be big here compared to the big three sports and will never reach the appeal that it does to other countries.

It's the ADD society that we live in today. That's why football is so much more popular than baseball and why soccer will never gain traction here. Americans just find the sports too slow to hold their attention. Pretty unfortunate but that's the way it is.

the reason that the answer should be a resounding world cup response is because the U.S. is a top hockey team. winning that really isn't that fricking cool. hell, we're the one seed right now, we should win at this point.

we are the underdogs in soccer. itd be the biggest and most important sports championship of any of your lives (not necessarily having the most personal effect, but the biggest in an affecting the world scale), whether you like it or not. and that is not a hyperbole in any way, shape, or form.
