Athletes are paid what the market will bear. Some people just don't like that. The fact is that humans have always placed an extremely high value on entertainers.

People who bristle at what they consider exorbitant salaries for athletes often don't think corporate CEOs are overpaid and vice versa. If I was in charge, they'd both take a pay cut, but I'm not in charge.

The fans of pro sports hold all the power IMO. Think about it...

-we always buy food at stadium (that $ goes to athlete)
-we buy the replica jerseys (that $ goes to athlete)
-we wish to associate ourselves with this athletes so we buy the latest $500 pair of jordans(that $ goes to athlete)

So why as a society do we place great emphasis on whether someone can make a tackle or hit a 100-MPH fastball, when we should be placing great emphasis on people who cure diseases, etc.

Technically if someone wanted to see me naked and paid me a million dollars every time to do so, I wouldn't be overpaid.

Doesn't matter what you do in life.

definitively. The government should take their money and give it to everyone who makes less than them.

No.

The physical and mentally strain of playing professional sports is rough. Hell...football players are essentially cutting 5 years off their life span. They deserve their money.

Are they paid too much for what they do . . . I believe they are without a doubt. However, they have shorter careers so I guess they have to get it while they can. What I have more of a problem with is when they sign huge contracts with guaranteed money and then they (or the owners) want to renegotiate or change the terms. What is the point of the initial contracts if they are going to change the damn things.

The preferred method would be for athletes to make maybe 25%-50% of what they make, then let them earn money through marketing their image and through merchandise. Maybe that way it would clean up some of the dysfunctional idiots that make millions and embarrass the team and sport.

I now step down from my soapbox.

This.

Do I think they make an exorbinant amount of money playing a game? Sure. But they also are paid what the market (pretty much) says they should be paid. And I'm okay with that. Like someone said, you're worth what someone is willing to pay you, and obviously owners are willing to pay the athletes shite tons.

Exactly. Your employer isn't going to pay you more than what you can bring in. These NFL teams (and the league itself) gains millions upon millions upon millions of dollars in revenue/profit. Teams wouldn't pay players like Brees 100 mil contracts, or sign James for insane money, etc.. if they weren't bringing in a significant amount more than what they are paying them.

Do you think it's stupid for people to be paid millions to play a game? I'm sure the homeless guy on the street thinks it's dumb for me to sit in front of a computer 8 hrs a day in a cozy office for my salary.

"overpaid" is a very subjective term.

ETA: If you think about it, these NFL and NBA players are in the top 1% of talent for their "job". What do the top 1% of CEO's in the world make? Top 1% chefs/restaurant owners? Top 1% accountants? Etc....

People in Arena Leagues, NBA d-leagues, and Minor league baseball make significantly less for playing the same game these other guys make millions playing. Because the market for those "players" and "teams" aren't in high demand. Those players aren't in the top percetile for their job, so they make significantly less.

Celebrity Net Worth

Haven't read this entire thread, but this is a pretty cool site. Not sure how accurate but you can look up salaries for all kinds of athletes or celebrities.

I stand by the claim you are what the market will bear, and if someone is willing to pay than good for you. I also think the large amounts talked about on ESPN are very inflated and people don't understand the athlete isn't getting near that amount.

For major athletes this is a part that most people do not think about. How much money does the saints make off of Brees jersies? Let's say they make $5 million (just a random number) off of him from merchandise. I want my cut because if I leave the team some other team gets a major name to market their merchandise.
