Great thread!
I could have written every word the OP wrote. I thought it was 1280 am that carried the Astros games in New Orleans. I laid in my bed many a night listening to a transistor radio of those west coast games. I still despise the Dodgers and Lasorda. How many times did they break our hearts?
I loved Gene Elston and Staats, the latter still calls Tampa games.
This is the golden age of Houston Astros baseball.

Early 80s. I remember thinking Jose Cruz was the best player ever.

Grew up in Houston in the 70's and 80's. Going to a game and seeing Nolan Ryan dominate in the dome. We sat 1st row above the Astros dugout. That's when I got really interested.

a long-term Astros fan hates the dodgers and the reds

Wow I was at the same Nolan Ryan 5 no hitter game also! Just graduated high school.
The crowd starting buzzing about the seventh inning. By the time the top of the ninth came, the hair was standing up on the back of my neck. Crowd was going crazy with every pitch.

For as long as I can remember. Have a photo of me as a pre schooler with Astros batting helmet from late 60’s early 70’s. Went to Nolan Ryan’s first game with Houston. In HS in early 80’s could sit in outfield for 2.00. I have 2 dome seat in my basement now

My dad would bring me to Beaumont as a kid to see his brother. We'd drive from New Orleans and catch a series. Rafael and Mike Scott days. It was hard being a fan when your cousins back home were watching the Braves on TV.
Then, they had some success with the killer B's and I was finally able to tell all those cousins to frick off a few years ago

This entire thread is likely false. Astros posted numerous 0.0’s in tv ratings during their tanking years.
A vast majority of the people in this thread were not watching every game through the actual tough years. I guarantee that and can prove it.
Long time REAL fans I respect y’all and feel somewhat bad that nobody outside of Astros fandom will ever acknowledge the championship.

Wasn't that partly because of cable providers not showing games?
Saw the Astros play when I was 4 vs the Braves..2nd deck, third base line, 2 rows up or so.. I remember looking up at the Astrodome scoreboard and the animations. Never really rooted for another team.

Kinda hard to watch games that aren’t available on TV
But generally speaking people aren’t as enthusiastic about teams when they are truly horrible. You couldn’t pry me away from LSU games in 2019. Last year I went to see Cowboy Mouth the night of the Alabama game

Ever since they were known as the Last-ros and the Disas-tros and the Astrodome was still standing.
BUT, I am not from an MLB city, so, I have a half-dozen teams that I like to follow. I mean, wasn't everybody at least a LITTLE happy for the Cubs when they won the WS recently?

frick, man, hardly anyone watches every game now, considering there are 162 of them and people have shite to do.
It doesn't help either that MLB has some retarded blackout rules. I couldn't get the games on any TV streaming service when I was living in BR but they were blacked out on MLBTV.
Now I watch a lot more because only the Braves and Reds are blacked out.

And then the Astros clowning all over them the past 5-7 years.

In 1966, not long after the Colt 45s became the Astros after the Astrodome was built. My Little League baseball team went there after our season ended.
The ground crew were dressed like astronauts with orange jumpsuits and space helmets.
