The "irrelevant" talk is largely overblown
Their name is why they will never be irrelevant. They have been irrelevant as an elite program. The biggest "win" they've last 10 years was the almost win vs USC in 05.

ND went 10-2 in 2003 and got denied a BCS bowl opportunity
2002. They got smoked by USC who was also 10-2 and Iowa was 11-1, those were the at large teams.
In any event, they do have to recruit nationally and it is still a top 10-15 job.

And not Texas, Ohio State or USC? Really or am I missing something?

Really all of the top schools in the three top conferences HC jobs are comparable. It comes down to where you want to live.

For the most part, I would agree with this. Personally, I think Texas is number 1, but there are a lot of other programs where a good coach shouldn't have problems.

that still does not make them a big boy program or one of the best in college football

I agree, but I feel Oklahoma, Michigan, Nebraska, and USC might be on the outskirts as well. There are a lot of good jobs out there.

They're the biggest school in one of the "big 3" high school states and are now in the best conference in cfb.

Mainly because these programs don't have to recruit nationally.
You're putting WAY too much emphasis on this
interesting comment from a Vols fan. When UTn was an elite program in the 90's , they were recruiting nationally. Tenn doesn't produce enough talent they have to recruit at least regionally and that's more difficult to maintain.

You really think that A&M would be able to sway coaches over the likes of Oklahoma, Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, etc?
Not sure what you mean, but none of those teams would sway coaches from each other. If they are compeating for the same guy as one of those it would depend on a lot of things. But that's not really the point. They can hire a top notch guy and build a big program.

That doesn't change the fact that Texas is the most popular team, among fans and recruits, in the state by a landslide.

I think programs who have a good amount of instate talent and can also recruit nationally have the best advantage:
USC---lots of CA talent, but also recruits nationally.
Bama---Decent amount of in state, but also has great neighbors in MS, GA, TN, and nearby FL.
LSU----Great in state talent, Texas, MS, FL nearby also help.
Ohio St---Great in state similar to LSU, but has PA, NJ, and FL to recruit nationally.
Notre Dame---not great in state, but close to MI, OH, NJ, PA, to recruit the midwest well. Also has great inroads to CA and FL.
OU-------Decent in state talent, but best neighbor possible in TX. Also recruits pretty good nationally.
Michigan----Similar to Oklahoma in that they have decent in state talent, but a colossal neighbor to get recruits from. Also recruit well nationally.

basically
A&M is one of those programs that do less with more

Depends on how you define it, you are just using recent results, which is terribly short sighted. I don't think anyone said they are one of the best programs in CFB at the moment, but because they have the necessary ingredients, it can be argued its a top job.
If they weren't a big boy program, would the biggest of big boy conferences have invited them to join? They are the #2 program in Texas, that makes them a big boy program. They were the dominant team in Texas in the late 80's and early 90's.

I love people that have no knowledge of Texas talking like they do, its comical. There are pretty much just as many Aggies in the state as Teasips. Texas has more T-Shirt fans at the moment, because they have been better, but in the 90's it was the opposite. Recruits can easily be swayed by the right coach, plus there are plenty to go around.

so Mizzou a program with like 3 10 win seasons since the 60's is a big boy

they do have the potential but you really can't call them a sleeping giant.

they did win alot in the old SWC but did nothing in the Big12 there is really no reason when texas rose back to what it was that they could not sustain success.
It a good job no doubt but not one of the best in CFB

The formula the OP is using is flawed.

Oh, you call the Longhorns teasips. How cute...

Bull-fricking-shite. Maybe more Aggs in Houston, but not the rest of the state.
Besides, most of the recruits don't like A&M. They like Texas better. Most of the recruits are black, and basically blacks don't care for a school as backwards as A&M. now, that may change a little due to their current coach, but overall Texas is the fricking king in Texas. Sorry.

Yes, but you forget about poaching schools like LSU, Arky, and Oklahoma who cut into A&M's recruits all the time. Add to the fact that A&M has absolutely ZERO appeal to the rest of the country, you have less recruits looking at your school than it seems.
Right now they're recruiting well because of Sumlin and promised playing time. We shall see how it works out for them.

Mack Brown has only 1 more Big 12 Title than A&M

I would put it at top 15-20 with potential to move into the top 10. Texas and Florida would get my votes as the top 2.

No they are called, you need another team cause we don't want an odd # and UNC and Md said no. A&M was clearly the team the SEC was after.
well we know who would have been picked if they had a better tv market

No, its evidenced by the # of actual aggies vs longhorns. If longhorn fans are in such overwhelming numbers in the state, why have so few cable providers picked up the LHN?

bull-fricking-shite. A&M's enrollment and # of grads is basically the same and in some years exceeds UT. The breakdown in all the big cities, save Austin would be about the same for each. Texas has more Tshirt fans at the moment. Tshirt fans usually only come out when the team is good. Texas would rank as the most popular team, but by a plurality and not a very large one.
