This maybe a second tier nomination, but Fisher Deberry was damn good at Air Force.

Michigan fans worship Bo. He never won a natty
In 20 years at Michigan, his teams finished in the Top 10 AP Poll 16X. His highest finish was #2 behind BYU.
He also had the misfortune of the 10- year war with Woody Hayes. If you lost that game, your were out of it.
5-4-1 against Woody. Woody won 2 National Championships during that period. Back then you had to be good but lucky in when you lost and to whom....The Game was always the last game of the year and unlike now, you couldn't lose late in the season as Pollsters would plummet you.

Manhattan KS is not exactly a nice place to live.
Why? You ever been there before? I’ve visited a few times and it seems really nice actually. Nice little college town.

They did not finish at 2 behind BYU.. they finished 6-6 that year.

Correct. They were BYU's sacrificial lamb in their bowl game.

Obviously not on the Snyder/Beamer/Alvarez level for longevity, and he didn't win a bunch of games or a title for obvious reasons, but what Bill O'Brien did in his two years at Penn State was absolutely incredible. That could have very easily turned into a post-scandal SMU situation, but he somehow kept some of that team together and had them playing infinitely more competitive football than they should have.

Mark Mangino has a spot somewhere among coaches who lack longevity, depending on your view of the issues he had with Kansas.
When you look at the Kansas football program from a macro perspective, Mangino really had a good run. That's tarnished by issues with players. I'm not sure what all actually happened, but he's the only KU coach with a winning record going back to the 1950s. Leipold may join him over the .500 mark soon.

Mangino was a miracle worker. It is funny to me that traditional doormats TT and Kansas who fired coaches because their baby shite soft players couldn't handle a little criticism both immediately went into the toilet.

And Petersen with Boise State and Washington
Petersen was a very good to great coach, but he inherited a mid major juggernaut at Boise.

Yeah, Boise State was definitely in good shape with Hawkins. But they did even better, and reached new heights with Petersen.
(Hawkins went on to go 19-39 with Colorado.)

Too many to name:
Bobby Dodd
Frank Broyles
Mark Richt
Bo Schembechler
Frank Beamer
Bill Snyder
Mike Leach
Barry Alvarez
Hayden Fry
John Vaught
David Shaw
Chris Petersen
John Cooper
Kyle Whittingham
There may be more but drawing a blank.

Arkansas didn't get the AP in 1964-65, but they did get the FWAA.
I wasn't around in 1964-65, but it seems to me the AP botched it.
Alabama got the #1 final ranking in the AP. They went 10-1. Lost to Texas in the Orange Bowl.
Arkansas went 11-0, and beat (#1 at the time) Texas earlier in the season. That was Texas's only loss of the season.

What about Jimbo Fisher? He did win a championship though.

Middle of nowhere, and yes I have. Worse than Starkville.

Beamer, Snyder, Ferentz, Pinkel, and Brian Kelly the winningest ones without a title.
Forgot about Bo as well
Got to think Snyder for what he did will stand tall here. Curious to see what Iowa fans think of Ferentz when it is all over
