Definitely should be able to market themselves. They are part of a BILLION dollar industry and are not allowed to make a dime off of it. They are giving their bodies for this and most have no chance of ever making it to the NFL.

That is where I am coming from too...no need to give a star QB a six figure income for some serious bling-bling, but at least give them some spending cash.

Hell, even something as low as 2k per semester as part of the scholarship (similar to the setup team managers have) would be more than sufficient for me.

They make $50,000 a year. it's called a scholarship and room and board

Depends on what schools they go to. A lot of schools are cheap compared to schools in Cali.

I would vote that they had to have at least a 3.5 GPA. Which no one would have, so problem solved.

I got my tuition paid and I was still able to work a job because I didn't have practice, team meetings, games, etc. Also I didn't make the university MILLIONS of which I didn't see a cent. These guys have their likeness used in videogames, they don't see a penny. One knee injury away from never playing another down and they are FORCED to stay away from the NFL and the big bucks until they are out of highschool for 3 years. It is a built-in system to make the schools and TV networks all the money and exploit these athletes who can't do anything about it. I say pay them

+1

Some academic scholarships come with built-in student worker jobs that pay at least minimum wage, right? So not only do they get their tuition, books, etc. covered, but they get hooked up with a job to earn some spending money.

Athletes for the most part, are unable to work during the season, and are obviously exploited by the university and the NCAA for a profit, but get no additional compensation for their time put in on their extra-curicular activities.

I think it's a joke, but I also wouldn't have a problem in mandating a 3.0, just like is required for most other scholarships. (At LSU, at least...)

Definitely NO PAY. If they were to get paid, then they would lose the heart they have for the game. That is why college football IMO is better than the NFL. The NFL is more like a job. College football seems to me more of a passion.

i know acouple of ex-"college football" players from the ole' local university that didnt do shite and were dumb as shite, and got above a 3.5. one was "All-SEC honor roll with a 4.0 gpa"

Also see alot of players myspaces have range rovers and 24" rims when they start playing football at the university

Yes it is completely unfair to not pay them. Or at least let them have a job in the offseason. I was a scholarship athlete in the 90s. I still needed money for clothes, laundry detergent, cable, books, school supplies, shoes, shampoo, deodarant, toothpaste, and other items that would come up during the semester. My parents did not have a lot of money. I had to live off whatever I made during the summer. It was very difficult. Couldn't have much of a social life either. During my junior and senior seasons I had to observe high school classes. This meant driving to the various local schools. Had no car or gas money. Fortunately I was able to bum rides from people. Anyway it would have been nice to have a job and be able to afford a small car note. It is completely unfair to not pay these athletes or at least let them have a job.
