Still it doesn’t appear to be any more drastic of a hit than many others. And the sideways slides begins immediately. After reviewing a bunch of those findings it appears to have been the combination of both impacts had him in an unnatural position in the seat when the wall hit occurred. Sad Day for all.

I think they calculated he went from traveling at 165-170mph to 43mph in a fraction of a second.
His speed decreased by 43 mph in a fraction of a second. Still a huge number.
Similar force to being parked and hit head on by a car going 90 mph.

To me, he took a harder hit at Talladega in ‘96. Very similar to the hit into the wall that killed him.

The Newman wreck on Monday got me to looking back at Earnhardt’s death. I was younger then and never really looked into what happened. Didn’t realize how severe it was inside his car. I feel for Schrader for whatever he saw.
I also began watching other fatal wrecks over all racing series and the worst was Russell Phillips.
But then you look at wrecks that are just like Newman’s... Rusty Wallace at Daytona and Talladega, Geoff Bodine at Daytona, and Michael Waltrip at Bristol
It’s crazy how some of these were able to survive...

I did the same thing.
Fell down a reddit rabbit hole and read a ton of horrific details about the worst crashes in Motorsport history.

Crazy photo...
And then you come across the death of F1 driver Tom Pryce...
And then you come across the death of F1 driver Tom Pryce...
quote:
Pryce was directly behind Stuck's car along the main straight. Stuck saw Jansen van Vuuren and moved to the right to avoid both marshals, missing Bill by what Tremayne calls "millimetres". From his position Pryce could not see Jansen van Vuuren and was unable to react as quickly as Stuck had done. He struck the teenage marshal at approximately 270 km/h (170 mph).[53] Jansen van Vuuren was thrown into the air and landed in front of Zorzi and Bill. He died on impact, and his body was badly mutilated by Pryce's car.[54] The fire extinguisher he had been carrying smashed into Pryce's head, before striking the Shadow's roll hoop. The force of the impact was such that the extinguisher was thrown up and over the adjacent grandstand. It landed in the car park to the rear of the stand, where it hit a parked car and jammed its door shut.[52] The impact with the fire extinguisher wrenched Pryce's helmet upward sharply. Death was almost certainly instantaneous.

You beat me to the Pryce wreck. The dude running across the track was torn apart.
His body was so torn to pieces that it was identified only after the race director had summoned all of the race marshals and he was not among them.

Who was involved in the wreck that threw the driver into the wire fence at such a pace that basically exploded his body into mist?
It was during a practice or qualifying day and nobody was in the stands(or MANY people would have been killed).
But the driver was basically dismembered into a massive area of the track and stands and they found small pieces of him scattered...everywhere.

Christ, what a video to watch.

There it is.
The details of that wreck and the unwillingness of people involved to talk about what they saw are pretty shocking.

Apparently there is video of it from security cameras at the track but it was only released to those investigating the crash.

Probably the worst crash I have seen was Gordon Smiley's at Indianapolis during qualifying for the 1982 Indy 500. His brain was scattered all over the track.

Horrible crash. Indy back then was still a mom and pop operation in those days with some teams. He wasn't properly fitted in the car. His head was higher in the car than other drivers. He never should have been allowed to run that car.

Wow.
Very similar dynamics to the Dale wreck. Is that F1?

Greg Moore's crash in 1999 was extremely awful as well. You knew he was dead watching it.

The Russell Phillips crash info that I came across said that he was decapitated by the caution light and his head was recovered on pit row still in his helmet.

Nothing worse than Gordon Smiley (Indy) or Tom Price (F1)
Maybe Tony Renna, but it is impossible to know what’s fact and what’s legend with that one.

Dan Wheldon’s crash was really bad, Paul Tracy said he saw him the infield care center and his face (hit a catch fence support pole) was flattened out.
The Bianchi crash in F1 was pretty bad as well, basically lobotomized by that track vehicle he slid under
Zanardi getting his legs cut off but surviving is one of the crazier wrecks as well. Steve Trammell the safety team doctor describes there being so much blood he was slipping in it trying to get up the banking to the car.

It is what was then known as CART. Basically, it’s what is currently IndyCar.
