So, if it gets postponed and then you throw Greinke and Verlander in 4 and 5 and lost both of them, then you're forcing yourself into an elimination game with the bullpen. Now maybe if you lose game 4 with Greinke you go for the bullpen in game 5. Or maybe JV wins it.

I think the only way you throw verlander Friday is if they win game 4.

No matter what the bats need to start working counts and working their pen with the 4 straight games

I think you roll with Greinke tomorrow and see what happens before deciding on Friday.

You have to, imo, if you insist on throwing Greinke tomorrow. I would still stick with Urquidy tomorrow and Greinke Friday for the reasons in my previous post.

Greinke in Yankee stadium is frightening.

Then again, Greinke pitching at all is pretty frightening.

The main reason I chose Greinke is the wind factor. I'd rather the veteran who, when he's on, is more of a ground ball pitcher out there rather than a rookie who is a JV-level flyball pitcher. If the wind is blowing out 20-25 mph, Urquidy is going to get murdered.

I know Greinke has given up 5 homers in two playoff games but he might be able to battle with his assortment of junk better in adverse conditions.

I dont see any scenario where Verlander isn't pitching Friday. Hinch already used him on short rest to try to end a series early. He will absolutely use him on full rest Friday.

@JeffPassan
THREAD (1/x)

Game 4 of the ALCS has been postponed. The fallout is going to be awfully interesting.

What's certain: Masahiro Tanaka and Zack Greinke will pitch on full rest in Game 4. Certainly helps the Yankees.

Less certain: When do both teams deploy their bullpen game?
10:47 AM · Oct 16, 2019·TweetDeck

2/X

If the Astros win Game 4 and are up 3-1, they could run out Justin Verlander on full rest in Game 5 and try to button up the series in New York. Or they could pocket him, knowing they've got him and Gerrit Cole on full rest with just one game to win down in Houston.

3/X

If the Astros lose Game 4 and the series is tied, the incentive to pitch Verlander in Game 5 certainly would strengthen. But again: Potentially being down 3-2 in the series but headed home with Verlander and Cole isn't the worst position. It's why Game 3 was so important.

4/X

For the Yankees, while getting Tanaka for Game 4 on full rest is a gift, the reality of days on four consecutive games is a nightmare. Their strength is their bullpen, and the idea that they can tax their best arms four days in a row just is not realistic.

5/X

Remember, Aaron Boone didn't use his relievers on back-to-back-to-back days at all during the regular season. Now, perhaps he was judicious to save them for October, but it's an enormous ask, and the Yankees are going to need far better starting pitching than they've gotten.

6/X

If the Yankees win Game 4 with Tanaka, do they go with James Paxton on full rest in G5 or use their bullpen game then. It may depend on when the Astros play Verlander. If he pitches in 5, do the Yankees punt with the 'pen game and go Paxton/Severino on full rest in Houston?

7/7

tl;dr version: The next few days in the ALCS are going to be utterly fascinating. There could be plenty of gamesmanship -- start Chad Green, act like it's going to be a bullpen game, then bring in Paxton? -- and high intrigue. Great series given a unique twist by the rain.

8/7

P.S.: One more thing in favor of running out Justin Verlander in 5 on full rest if the Astros win 4: If they can finish the series in New York, Houston would have Gerrit Cole for Game 1 of the World Series and Verlander on full rest for Game 2. That would be enormous.

This likely only applies to me in this thread, but with the rainout, this game will be on FS1 on Friday, when OSU was supposed to be playing NW. That game will now be in B1G network for anyone else who may care and want to watch CFB as well

This is what you play for IMO. We obviously need to win this series, but the above is what the goal should be.

Agreed. JV has to pitch as soon as he is ready in this series so we can have him early in the next series.
