8:20pm: Only teams that are over the luxury tax threshold will be required to give up a pick to sign a qualified free agent, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag tweets. That would represent a rather monumental change to the qualifying offer system. It would also come with some interesting practical impacts, as teams might conceivably seek to drop under the luxury tax line to avoid the necessity of draft compensation, though of course that won’t be of nearly as much importance if first-round picks are in fact taken off the table.

This is big to me

Yeah I am fine with 5 years

Now that 6 year 160 deal was nuts but no way that's real

ETA there is no way the comp pick thing is in play for this year. Not after QOs have already been given out and turned down/accepted

Thoughts
1. Manfred didn’t become commish easily. Underappreciated pressure?
2. Do draft medicals change? MRIs?
3. Encarnacion stays AL East

I would hope so. I like how Stros fans bitch about production but will balk at a legit middle of the order hitter because of money, when they have a low arse pay roll. They have the talent to win now, they are missing a piece like this.

Not all of us think that way. It's not my money. They have been cheap for too long.

If we could front load the contract (29-26-23-20-17 or something like that) it would save us money down the line when our young guys are in arbitration or being extended.

I agree with all of this.

I guess some people may just still be suffering from PTSD from the Carlos Lee contract.

Did you see that tweet about E5's home run chart that said "RIP Crawford Boxes"

I forget what site that is. Can someone post the graph of EE's HRs and Minute Maid?
