Sounds like the problem isn’t ESPN. The problem is Capitalism.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having read this. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It's really easy to get a show like PTI or around the horn on the air and that's why they keep it

Those aren't mid day shows. They come on at 4 and 4:30 cst. The demographics may switch once the retired class dies off. But by then, something else will replace those shows altogether.

This speaks more about ESPN's issue imho (Not so much the political angle). Every major cable channel is trying to figure out a way to handle the lost of subscribers while trying to be fresh and new. ESPN gets most of the spotlight because they have a huge contract with America's favorite league (the NFL).

So ratings are up on WokeCenter because ESPN finally figured out distribution? Come on.

No they wouldn't. It's so easy to get highlights through different sources these days.

People say this, but I don't think its true. First off, SportsCenter's ratings went up when they started playing more highlights. Secondly, a lot of the non-highlights shows get awful ratings.

And yes, people can get the viral moment on twitter, but what made SportsCenter great is that you could sit down for an hour and get ALL of the important highlights in one sitting. You don't have to track down each individual game.

Also, I think we forget one of the most common ways to watch ESPN: in a bar, sometimes without sound. They can get a lot of eyeballs by showing highlights in that way. Sure, you're gonna lose out the super directed fans who want just their favorite player or team, but SC is still the best show for a sports generalist. Show some f'n highlights.

ESPN should stop being tmz sports and actually have in depth coverage of sports. I’m tired of the MJ vs Lebron debates, what an athlete is doing on Twitter, and what pop star is at a sporting event. I watched MLB Network yesterday and it was refreshing to see actual discussion about a team like the Mariners.

I actually agree 100 percent. I’m sick of the starfrickers. ESPN cares more about Johnny Doichebag in the CFL than they do about the World Cup. I don’t care AT ALL what some athlete tweeted. Their CWS coverage yesterday was a tribute to the Clemens family. Their top news story a week ago on the Bottom Line is that Kevin Durant “might” retire in six years. This is why I’m done with them outside of live sports.

And I would hate Jamele Hill on my TV no matter what her race is. She is awful television.

For instance, Bill Simmons blows goats on tv.

I don't think any of them have figured out distribution perfectly because everything is still evolving to some level.

Why can't people admit that politics has turned people off? Every time this thread happens, someone is like "people are changing viewing habits!" The network itself has admitted the politics and the attacking of the sports themselves has hurt their viewership. Pretending it has nothing to do with it is silly.

I think you'll have a difficult time getting some people to sit for an hour without being distracted by something (Specifically their smartphone).

I mean this still happens nowadays. I can see at a bar a notice that a certain player is out for the incoming Sunday.

Ok

Yes. Politics has had an effect and was a big reason why things like SC6 failed. But we aren't having a legit conversation about ESPNs future if people were still lining up to pay for cable

I have no issue admitting politics has played some role in this. But I do not believe it's played this massive role that some people want/need it to.

This idea that ESPN needs to go back to what it was in 2005 is a complete and utter joke. Along with the fact that our tv habits have changed drastically in a short period of time.

I didn't mind Michael Smith or Jamele Hill at first when they were on ESPN. They actually talked mostly about sports and it was cool.

But somewhere along the way they turned into some kind of black power advocates or something and it completely rubbed me the wrong way. It's like their entire persona suddenly revolved around race.

ESPN made a play to do more politics and talk about domestic abuse policies and concussions. Those things aren't resonating with their evolving audience. They also aren't things that their typical audience want to indulge in. OTL does great reporting, but I don't think many people want wall to wall of football players punching out ladies and what that means, etc.

I completely quit watching ESPN outside of actual live games about a year ago.

Best decision ever.

EXACTLY my thinking.

Clicking on the link that pops up on my notifications that says, "WOWZERS, Stanton hits a 900 ft HR" isn't the same as mindlessly taking in an hour of sports highlights that are nicely packaged in a way to where you can get a grasp on say, playoff races in the NL and AL.

I'm probably wrong. But that's where my thinking is.

So should they completely gloss over those two issues? Because they are certainly being talked about (sometimes reported) on social media.

The editorial decisions are theirs alone. All we can do is look at what it has wrought.

Also, Jemelle hill was on twitter playing the race angle on the Kellen Winslow jr stuff.

This is literally the first time I've seen her name mentioned since she left SC6. So what is she doing now?

I quit watching ESPN a couple years ago as well. I didn't make a conscious effort to do it. I just gradually started watching it less and less because I was so turned off by the constant politics.

And I'm a big sports fan and used to always watch ESPN. But I don't even bother with it anymore.
