Saints-Panthers split the series this year.
that's part of the point. they split the series and lost in the same round of playoffs. one team had a better record over the course of 16 games. why would the other team be better?

Not even just that, the Saints had the chance to win the division, over the team people are putting them above, and lost to that team.

Don't power rankings usually mean who is the stronger team right now?
Pretty sure I'd pick the Saints to beat every one under them, and even the Broncos right now

And there is also plenty of logical reasoning as to why others feel the Panthers are better.

Not to mention...the Panthers started out 1-3(barely losing to Seattle and Arizona) and then finished 11-1. Saints finished out the year losing 3 of 5.
I really don't see any good argument where they possibly think they were better.

My favorite list so far, but I would have Carolina ahead of NOLA.
The Packers would be interesting to place because their record wasn't great, but that was because their former MVP QB was out for half of the season along with Randall Cobb.
With those guys back and getting healthy, who knows what happens if the 49ers miss that FG at the end of the game.

yeah, it has nothing to do with the arguments but I just found it hilarious to add in

well, lets see.
The Saints beat the Panthers pretty thoroughly at the Super Dome.
then the Panthers squeaked out a last second win at home a few weeks later against them.
so I could see why some would say the Saints were the better team.
if the Panthers don't step it up on offense and put more points on the board, I think we'll see them take a step back next season. They've got a good defense but clearly they need to get better on offense.

Yes.
But since Team X beat Team Y in October they are 100% better.
That's what's going on in this thread. If someone wants to make the argument that Carolina or New England would beat New Orleans right now because of reasons x,y, and z then that would be perfectly fine.
However, all I'm hearing is that Carolina is better because they won the division, and that New England is better because they beat them heads up three months ago.
New Orleans was running the football a lot more and a lot better the last few games. Even against Seattle. Their defense was playing really well and getting pressure up front. They were struggling a bit throwing the ball downfield, but were still overall turning into a really balanced team as the season ended.
I believe that defense is the most important in the end, though. That's why I think Carolina would beat New England if they played right now too. The Patriots are really depleted on that side of the ball. If a team can stop the run against the Patriots, they aren't a great team.

You realize the Panthers won 11 of 12 to end the season and the Saints lost 3 of the last 5? I don't understand how you thought they were playing better football. I'll say watching us lose twice to each of you, Carolina impressed me a lot more.

And you're not helping your case since we could have easily beaten you twice. Carolina at least beat us handily once.
look at this guy lol.
atlanta fans bragging about how carolina whipped their arse to somehow get at the saints.
fricking sad

If Matt Ryan doesn't hand Carolina the game, you could have easily beaten them the last game of the season.

in the second game between the Saints-Panthers, the Saints were breaking in a brand new starter at left tackle.
I mean this guy had ZERO playing experience in the regular season in the NFL. So Greg Hardy had his way with him in the 1st half.
both defenses played real well in that game. The Carolina offense and the Saints offense were both ranked really high in 3rd down conversions on the year. So to watch both defenses keep forcing punts was impressive if you like good defense.
like CocoLoco said, losing Vaccaro was a big blow to the Saints D in that game. And... you had Terron Armstead making his first start at left tackle against one of the best defenses in the league.
