They may have tried to spare him the agony.

Yes, the lap after his first pitstop, which was slow due to a screwup, was 8.5 seconds.
When the safety car came out he had already closed the gap below 5 seconds.
Literally closing the gap, they even questioned if Russell was having issues because of how quickly Bottas was closing the gap.

Keep trying, man. Russell was going to easily win.

Russell was likely going to win, not sure about it being easily.

"That was a colossal frick up"
Frankly, I'm surprised that doesn't happen more in some of these post race interviews.

That's cruel showing Checo with the trophy in the background.

Random but as someone who just started following F1 recently are y’all constructor fans or driver fans? I imagine there’s a bit of Ferrari fans

It's kind of cool because you can have more than one driver or team that you pull for.
You can pull for great drives like Checo had today or great stories like George going for his first points in spectacular fashion.
You can appreciate smaller teams punching above their weight even it means they are beating the team you want to win.

This is where I'm at
Pierre fighting everything that happend in the past year, to take his first win
Checo always in a second class car, finally winning
George being stuck at the worst team, and finally getting a shot in good equipment
Last year had the Ferrari hand off from old to new
Great storylines are everywhere (especially this year)
I grew up in awe of Schumacher and Ferrari's dominance, but I cant say that I'm a fan of them now... I love how Merc seems to be a perfectly oiled machine week in and week out... it is something truly to behold, especially when it goes wrong
McLaren and Renault's rise through the midfield in the past few years has been great to see

Leclerc 3 place grid penalty next week.
