he has had some great players with him.
I doubt they would have done all that well vs some Laker and Celtic teams of yore. Both had enough inside power to deal with both the admiral and timmie at the same time on the court.
The greatest team of all time was a Phila 76er team with several premier players including Wilt, pf Jackson and 6th man Cunningham.
I doubt spurs would be champs in those eras.
I'm as big of a Spurs homer as you'll find, but even I will stop short of saying Timmy is better than Jordan straight up. He is DEFINITELY more consistent than MJ, though. And I'd argue that he's the best of all time AT HIS POSITION (which is really how these arguments should go anyway when you stop and think about it).
As far as Tim having some great players with him, I don't know if I can agree with that. Yes, he had David Robinson for his first title, but look at the '03 team. David was a shell of himself, Parker was second year and needed Speedy effin' Claxton to close out games for him in the playoffs. Ginobili was a green, unproven rookie. Kevin Willis and Malik Rose were backups. None of those guys were heralded as great players back then, but playing with Duncan helped make them better. Duncan's greatest assets have been his coachability and his sacrificing himself for the team--he's been the foundation for the Spurs overachieving nearly every year he's suited up for the Silver and Black.
Finally, another stupid argument is comparing today's champs to past eras. But a staple of every Spurs' championship team has been their amoeba-like ability to adapt to any team's playing style. Perhaps the best example of this was the '05 Spurs team. Defense was their cornerstone, but when the situation called for run and gun against the Phoenix Suns, the Spurs beat them at their own game. Bring on the rough and tumble Pistons in the Finals? Same story, Duncan and Co. slugged it out to win the series.
tl;dr version: Duncan not better than MJ straight up, but is more dependent and has gotten more out of his teams for longer than MJ did

Can you please explain what you are basing this on. I would love to hear it

Except for 03 and last year when have the Spurs ever overachieved? Also its an unpopular opinion but its been Parker's team since about 06 or 07

I don't get it either. Jordan scored like 25-30 pts/game for a long time, played defense for a long time, won titles consistently. I just don't get it. Jordan is better in pretty much every way except rebounding and blocks.

Tim is one of the all-time greats. I enjoy people saying how his game is leaving him. It's quite laughable. His 'game' now is no worse than it was for their previous title runs. His stats show ONE huge difference...and that is minutes per game.
If you look at his per-36-minutes numbers, Duncan is having just another outstanding year. It must be nice when 15 and 9 a game is a down year. Like I said, that is simply because over the past 2 seasons, his minutes per game is actually 7 mpg less than his career average.
And this business about Duncan having great players around him? What great team has won rings with shite talent. I think on paper, the Detroit Pistons of 2004 are an outlier, but the Laker teams with multiple rings featured a dominant post player and Kobe Bryant. And face it, Manu Ginobili, while VERY streaky, was never a Kobe Bryant.
Also funny how much shite Tony Parker catches about his point guard play, but in these discussions it's mentioned how he is one of those outstanding players. So which is it?
Clearly, the guy is one of the best, and he has carried the team this year.
I have no idea how this team still does it. They face injuries, personnel changes, etc, but with an old core of players and the same kickass coach, these guys are up there with Durant, Westbrook, and Co. for top spot in the West.
It amazes me...basically no down years since 1997, a year that saw Robinson and Elliott hurt, which led to the Duncan pick.

I'd like to hear this also. Even at 40 after having been retired for years Jordan was arguably playing at a similar or possibly higher level than Duncan is currently

I feel like I should put this here

Well duh. Basketball is the easiest sport to have a high winning percentage, and there is by far the least turnover.
Yankees, Lakers, Patriots >>>> Spurs
I'd still put the Lakers ahead. I mean shite, 7 finals appearances? So what if they were bad for two years.

There is neither statistical or anecdotal evidence to backup that claim. One of Jordan's many claims to GOAT was the fact that he almost never missed a game or took a night off.

How are you still trying to defend this?

So when the Thunder win, is Durant the GOAT?
