I enjoy these two as well, but I don't think they write often enough, or in Hall's case serious enough as often, to be considered. I think of a sports writer as someone I can look to 3 or 4 times a week to discuss a variety of topics in the sports world or their specific niche. That being said, I think both are fantastic writers that I enjoy reading any chance I get.

I think the people saying he isn't good are just saying that because he is popular.

i've railed on simmons for 4-5 years

i've let up b/c he's gotten better than his low (HEY I WENT TO VEGAS AND I'M SO frickING COOL) era, but his knowledge of non-NBA sports is limited. there are also only so many pop references you can make

Joe Posnanski is by far the best
Gregg Easterbrook with his TMQ column

I understand. But I'm considering anyone who primarily writes about sports, not just the daily columnist types. Then you probably don't view Simmons as one either, right? He writes once a week.

Still, when those two write (and in Spencer's case seriously), it's the best there is.

I'm a big fan of Poz. I didn't list him because someone had earlier, but I read him regularly.

Henry Abbott also does a really, really good job breaking down the NBA on the True Hoops section of ESPN.com

ESPN has some good analytical NBA guys like Abbott, Hollinger, and Haberstroh. A lot of people don't like them though

And yes, Simmons does suck

I get what you're saying and maybe 3-4 a week was a little extreme. I have really enjoyed every Wright Thompson article I have read, it just feels like I only see one every few weeks. He may write more than that but I just don't realize it. I would even settle for once a week.

Regarding Simmons, back in the day when he 1st week to Page2, he was good for 2-3 article a week and his daily links. That is when I really enjoyed following him. Now I would prefer if he just stuck with podcasts.

People I can't stand:
Easterbrook
Reiley

Oh I wish he wrote more. It goes in spurts with him. He'll have a story a week some months, then disappear for 2-3 months.

I also like Bruce Arthur, when he's writing about sports I follow (not hockey).

He's with SBNation now, which is assembling some talent recently. Spencer Hall also writes for them.

Truth.

We could probably have an epic thread about how and when various aspects of ESPN went downhill.
