He did. After not playing for 3 years, he came out of retirement at 38 years old.

He played 60 games that year and led the team in scoring at 22.9 points per game.

The following season - he played all 82 games and averaged 20.0 points per game.... and tunred 40 years old before the season ended.

So, YES... he absolutely could have done it had that been something he was chasing.

averaging 28 points per... he would have broken that record.

He only avg like 20 his last couple seasons. He didnt have the longevity as lebron.

Winning Championships, MVPs and scoring titles was MJ's thing.

I mean he only won 6 out of 15 seasons. So more times than not he wasnt winning championships.

Also they changed the rules on carrying. Most dribbling in the NBA is carrying or Palming.

Furthermore, we really shouldn't be comparing LeBron to MJ. They are completely different players.

The comparisons for LeBron should be Magic, maybe Scottie Pippen, Dominique Wilkins, etc. Lebron's game is similar to these guys... he is just WAY better and he's sustained a level of excellence for much, much longer than these players. Even Magic.

THe MJ comparisons should be Kobe, Vince Carter, Reggie Miller, and Dr J. Maybe Dwayne Wade. Guys like that.

Go back and check out the history of the NBA.

You had the Celtics and Lakers at the top when MJ came into the league. Both loaded rosters with all-time great players.

And the Detroit Pistons finally overcame the Celtics and went to the Finals 3 years in a row. Along the way, they knocked MJ out... as Pippen and Horace Grant were growing up.

MJ didn't have the team around him to get through those guys until Pippen and Grant blossomed.

The game/rules were different back then.

Jordan wasn't catching anything or anyone in his time with Washington. He started having serious knee issues his first season and after 60 games had to call the season because of torn knee cartilage. MJ was dealing with serious pain in that knee. One of his teammates said:

“He would have to get his knee drained and it was like the grossest thing that I’ve ever seen,” Etan Thomas, who played alongside Jordan on the Wizards, recalled on Slate’s Hang Up and Listen podcast. Like his knee would swell up like the Elephant Man. And then they would come in with this long needle and drain it and there would be like this black tar goo stuff that would come out. It was disgusting.”

Kobe Bryant and MJ both had trouble with serious injuries that finished off their careers.

Magic Johnson was 31 years old. Sam Perkins and James Worthy were 29. And the Bulls kicked their asses.

And a great comeback win to boot. A lot of press these days as to whether Kareem would make the effort to be there when LeBron breaks the record but he has come out and said he would.

They were on different sides of the Covid 19 vaccination for players. LeBron was trying to support the players who chose not to get vaccinated and Kareem took serious offense to it, saying it was an affront to all black people. So they haven't said much to each other since. I suspect they will let the occasion be the event.

I think Jordan was one of the leaders of this change too. He started doing it and was amazing and people imitated his style.

Being able to carry the ball to the point of almost completely stopping your dribble like people do is just an incredible advantage for the offensive player. For the defender it’s almost impossible to tell if someone is going to rise to shoot or dribble past you when their hand goes under the ball like that. It used to be obvious someone was going up a for a shot when you couldn’t carry the ball. Has completely changed the game. Go back and look at old ball handlers, even like Isaiah Thomas era and back. They dribbled with their hand on top of the ball and it was so much easier for defender to predict what they are going to do.

You're correct

According to most records, accomplishments, and milestones (Other than titles won during a water downed 90's), LeBron resides several magnitudes higher than MJ

Most of this board is unable to admit that though because of a mixture of nostalgia for the old NBA, and inability to remove their personal feelings for LeBron from a rational debate about athletic ability and accomplishments.
