re: LeBron's max deal next summer could be 5yr/$217M - do you sign him?

He loses his athleticism, you still get a good 4. Even still, he's a very good passer. He may not be the best player, but he can still give you a legitimate 20/5/7

Yeah that's the issue. It you want 32 year old LeBron you'll have to pay him 200 over 5 or 150/4, roughly.
Worth it every time assuming he doesn't have a career ending injury in the first 2 or 3 years.

Trade, sign and trade, or walk. I'm not actually going to pay him that much.
You would be fired before being able to do any of these though.

Yeah I understand the higher caps are the result of higher revenues, but assuming the Cavs are over the minimum salary requirements, they don't have to pay any more than that. That is money that more or less would go to Gilbert if it was going to LeBron, after you account for his value in tickets and merchandise.
I'm not disagreeing with you, and if the cap keeps increasing so significantly then it won't matter.

For further perspective, the salary cap in '97-98 was $26.9 million.
But the NBA is dying they said. No one is watching it they said.

What does Gilbert care though? He makes most of his money from other things. I guarantee Gilbert could probably care less about 20-30 million if it means bringing in another championship or 3.
He's worth approximately 4 Billion dollars. You think he gives a shite about an extra 50 million?

no it isn't, when Maravich signed his first contract people thought that was insane

did you not read the rest of it? Cleveland is a unique scenario. He probably has an under the table ownership deal in place, along with his not so secret GM role.
Barring something totally unexpected next season, if you're any team, you pay him that.

I don't see how a team could possibly have enough assets for LeBron.

Yeah that's the issue
quote:Let me ask you this, thinking to the 2015-2016 landscape, would you pay 32 year old Lebron 5/130? We probably all do that without thinking twice, correct?

Yeah I'm not arguing against any of that, just pointing out the other side of the coin. I don't think there is much of an argument against paying him, but I figured others would come up with something and they have. Pvillegru is letting him walk.

The only owners who'd turn LeBron down if he said I'll come if you give me the max next year are the ones who could care less about actually winning.
If there was some kind of bizarro world with no cap, but still max salaries, LeBron would have 30 max deals on the table.

quote:Of course.
Considering LeBron turns even the shittiest roster into title contenders, I think pretty much every team in the league would offer him that if they could.
i'm shocked we're even having this discussion, but it 100% goes to not grasping the context of the revenue stream about to come in vs the new cap IMO.
quote:It's basically arguing do you want to be a top 2-3 titel favorite for 3-4 of those years and MAYBE he's too old and taking up too much cap room to compete the last couple of years...or would you like to be more than likely irrelevant(for CLE, 100% irrelevant) for all 5 of those season?
. Who gives a frick what he's making when he's old and broken?

I'm not actually going to pay him that much.
