He also seems like the type of guy Dodgers would put their swing change hex and he could bust out with some power

But yeah I think his career numbers away from Coors are not good

Back off. I'm not done dreaming of a Verlander, Kluber, Cole super rotation yet.

Yeah teams can buzz off about Castellanos too. Don’t they know the DAT been trying to make that trade happen for awhile now?

I'll jump into the mix here to say that ahead of Saturday's show, I was told by a person in a position to know that the #Cubs are *more* in on Harper than we've been led to believe. Whether that means due diligence or something more, I don't know.

Cubs have to cut serious salary to be able to afford Harper, that would have to happen first and dumping some of those big bad contracts will be very hard.

Cubs have a massive new tv deal kicking in the next couple of years, not to mention the extra money coming from marketing a player like Harper.

If they want to spend, they can. It'll cost some tax though.

Nah, Theo himself and everyone that writes for the Cubs have said for months now the only way they can make room is to cut serious salary and future salary.

They currently have the highest payroll in MLB for 2019 by nearly 30 million. After arbitration it could hit over 200M which is already over the tax.

quote:

Their biggest obstacle in pursuing one of the top free-agent sluggers—Bryce Harper or Manny Machado—is a payroll that was the third highest in the majors last year at $181 million.

Going into the winter meetings, the Cubs will have nine players earning more than $10 million, including four earning more than $20 million.

After arbitration figures are finalized, the Cubs could have a payroll in excess of $200 million.

Other teams' read on the Cubs' situation this winter: They have very little payroll flexibility, and will have to spend very carefully to affect upgrades for the 2019 season. The days of having a cheap core of young players are over for the front office.

THey have money coming off the books in 2020. Hamels for sure and few others I can’t think of

They will want to shed maybe 1 of the bigger deals if they can if they truly want to go toe to toe for Harper. Like that tweet says I think it has been a little overstated that they will not sit down at the table

Sitting down and trying to dump Chatwood/Heyward while also trying to swing for Harper is different that just trying to give Harper 350M and hitting the max luxury tax +42% and also losing their draft pick.

That's why you can find about a million different sources saying the same thing about the salary dump if they try and get him.

Good morning! After talking with a handful of MLB sources this weekend, I am starting to believe more than ever the Cubs will not be a factor for Bryce Harper or Manny Machado. The only way that changes is if Theo and Jed and Co. are able to move serious money off the books.

This is a good piece on the Cubs actual plans from this morning

quote:

LAS VEGAS — As the winter meetings begin, reality is sinking in: Theo Epstein isn’t just lying in the weeds waiting to pounce on Bryce Harper.

Fans don’t want to hear it, but money will be a topic of discussion all winter long. The Cubs have several needs to fill on a tighter budget than in recent winters. Ideally, moving a contract like Tyler Chatwood’s, Jason Heyward’s or even a smaller one like Brian Duensing’s or Brandon Kintzler’s would help the Cubs address their needs. But that may not be realistic.

One source suggested that as counter-intuitive as it may seem, shopping Ben Zobrist could make sense. Zobrist fits the mold of the contact hitter who can hit top-tier pitching and also brings that sense of urgency and leadership to the clubhouse. His resilience and dedication to his craft has to be commended after he bounced back from a rough 2017 at the age of 37.

The Cubs would rather not take all that away from this team, but removing his $12.5 million salary from the books ($14 million for luxury tax purposes) would give them more flexibility this winter. And with Zobrist turning 38 in May, it’s not out of the question that the Cubs would be selling high on the former World Series MVP.

Consider this scenario: The Cubs move Zobrist to a contender for some prospects. They then use that money to sign a top-tier reliever, bring in a contact hitter like Brantley or Markakis and then could still make a move to add an infielder via trade. And the prospects added via the Zobrist trade would allow them to maintain the depth of the farm system Epstein is focused on rebuilding. Someone like the Kansas City Royals’ Whit Merrifield would be at the top of the list, while Philadelphia Phillies infielder Cesár Hernández would make sense as well.
