teams seem to backload the money, but wouldnt it make more sense to front load it? maybe im coming at it from the wrong way, but i would rather put most of my money in his WAR producing years and give him incentive to opt out after 4 or 5 years than pay for his non WAR producing years and give him an incentive to opt in for the full 10

but maybe im wrong and have a bad take

It could really end up hurting you if the contract is already underwater. Since he would most definitely opt in and you would be on the hook for it.

Sorry meant to reply to the other guy not you. Backloading it is more risky I think. Assuming the opt out is early in the deal

wouldnt front loading minimize that though? if the contract is a bust, he will probably opt in regardless. so wouldnt you want to limit the amount hes opting into? it probably wouldnt make too much of a difference anyway. if its a bust it will hurt either way, but it just seems like it would hurt less, even if only marginally so

Yeah I didn’t mean to reply to you my b

I am curious to see where the opt out is in Harper’s deal though, I think he ideally wants to play on the west coast so he may want it later there vs in Philly I dk

also, at what AAV amount does a shorter deal look better than a longer deal with the early opt out? ive seen three years to be what boras and harper want from the phillies. but if he wants that opt out to use, wouldnt he be interested in a simple three year deal with either the giants or the dodgers?

i really do wonder at what amount of yearly pay does it start to overcome the long term safety net. 40 million? 50 million? its really interesting

I would think you would want to guarantee the least money possible. Hypothetically, let’s say you look at it from an extreme (and unrealistic) prospective where all the money is either front loaded or back loaded after a 5 year opt out. Option A it is all front loaded, you pay all $300 million over 5 years and he obviously opts out. Option B it is all backloaded, you get all the production for nothing up front, then he almost certainly opts in and it likely ends badly, but Option B is still clearly preferable. And again this is obviously an extreme, unrealistic scenario, but I think no matter what the numbers are, you want to lock yourself into least possible guarantee up front.

i guess for me the line of thinking is, would you rather pay more during his producing years and pay less during his non producing years? i personally would be more interested in that deal if i was the team but maybe im wrong. its a lot of money either way regardless of how its loaded

Wow just heard audio of Blue Jays GM saying he doesn't think Vlad Jr is and MLB ready player yet. What more does he need to prove

“I just don’t see him as a major league player.” While the consensus top prospect in baseball “has accomplished everything he can accomplish as an offensive player” in the minors, Atkins says, there’s evidently more he needs to work on before he’s to be trusted with a big league job. That includes “the physical aspect, the baserunning, the defense,” per the GM.

That’s just because they can’t say “we want to keep him down to gain an extra year of control”. He will be up in mid April.

Only Boras knows exactly who's offered what for Harper; officials involved are left to guess. Among latest shards of info: 1. PHI believed by some execs to still have highest $ offer. 2. LAD interest still predicated on shorter-team deal. 3. Giants in heavy, unsure of chances.

Harper has been linked to so many teams, it’s tough to keep track sometimes. So we asked OOTP to look at the other teams its own AI saw Harper signing with (the Padres and Dodgers), plus the Phillies, White Sox and Harper’s erstwhile team, the Nationals. Of those, the Dodgers easily offer the greatest amount of team glory — in fact, they would basically become a dynasty with Bryce on board, winning the 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2024 World Series and losing it in 2025 (as Harper would put up 44.3 WAR during seven seasons in L.A.).3 Individually, Harper would finish with 98.3 WAR in that universe, edging out his 93.2 WAR in the Cardinals simulation for the best of the options we looked at.

I believe Harper will sign with the Giants. If he were going to Philly he would have pulled the trigger by now. I don’t think he wants a shorter term deal with the Dodgers.
