Prime Deion was the most dominant nfl player I've ever seen if if he didn't tackle.

Gretzky's records are plainly absurd. If I didn't see it happen, I wouldn't believe it.

Wilt is the best example in hoops, but part of it was the NBA was not yet a mature league. So let's stick with Jordan.

Jim Brown is a great answer, but I think Jerry Rice was even more dominant, and that's no slight to Brown.

Baseball is a bit harder with the old timers. I mean, Ruth hit more home run s than some teams did. But of players who seemed to break the game? Bonds. Not even close.

Merckx owns cycling. His records make Lance look small.

Phelps is the next great answer for swimming.

Flo Jo in track. She still holds most of the sprinting records, and that's from 1988. Usain Bolt, of course, was a great leap forward.

Have you ever seen the movie "Limitless"? He would take a pill that gave him super senses and intelligence. He would predict what was happening in fights (among other things) before it happened, like he was coming from the future and knew what everyone was about to do.

I imagine that is what Gretzky felt on the ice. It was like he was playing a different game than his peers. So I count that "spidey-sense" as a dominant physical ability.

This is a good one.

Sprinters (and swimmers) can only perfect their technique so much, in the end it is a pure test of physical, god-given ability to run fast.

And nobody that has ever walked this planet is close to as fast as Usain Bolt in his prime. He was just playing with people. His time out of the blocks was average, but his stride was so insane it looked super-human.

Dude was laughing as he crossed the finish line and shattered world records.

I think part of being physically dominant is coordination and speed/balance combination. Gretzky looked like everyone else was lagged a second from real time because his decision making and coordination combined with his speed/quickness was so incredible. He isn't Alex Ovechkin as far as physique goes, or Bobby Orr as far strength in shot, but his physical talents were insane. I guess you could call it agility like this article does, is that a physical ability relevant to this thread? Agility seems important.

I guess everybody has different definitions and I agree on agility and hand eye coordination. I didn’t really watch hockey so I can’t give an honest opinion.
Athletes that are so physically superior that their sport has to change the rules would make a good starting point.
Wilt, Shaq and Tiger Woods are the 3 major ones I can think of.
Bo Jackson was the definition of athletic. His physical abilities didn’t seem possible.
Tyson, for me, was the baddest man on the planet. I didn’t think there was a human on earth that could come close to beating him at his peak. (I understand if others think he is overrated but at that certain time, nobody would have changed my mind.)
Phelps is also a good one.
Carl Lewis dominated sprints and won in long jump.

Would Tiger Woods fit here???

I mean, they used to "Tiger-proof" the courses and he would just hit it further.

Pistol Pete was incredible, but I still think it's hard to beat Kareem in college basketball.

He was only playing about half the game on loaded UCLA teams, never averaged less than 25-15, had a team that went 88-2 and won 3 nattys and forced the dunk to be outlawed.

I don't mean any disrespect to Maravich, because he did some insane things, but Kareem did just about everything you could ask of a college player. He was Player of the Year and Most Outstanding Player of the tourney in all 3 years he played.

Tyson wasn't dominant after Feb 11, 1990. He was pushed to the max by a guy Lennox and Tommy Morrison knocked out in a total of 8 rounds.
