UConn isn't an abbreviation any more than "Mike" is an abbreviation for "Michael".

Conn is the very definition of an abbreviation of Connecticut, what the hell are you talking about?

Do you know what Abbreviation means?

Technically almost everything in this thread is not an abbreviation, because acronyms are not abbreviations.

So why, then, are LSU fans up in arms over ULL calling themselves "Louisiana" if they don't use it in their branding?

Damn, a lot of you guys are overrating athletics and underrating academics in terms of name brand.

If you asked every American to name one college, then the most common answer would assuredly be Harvard.

When thinking of the schools with the most name recognition, then the top academic schools that go solely by an abbreviation are MIT and NYU.

It's a shortening.

In THIS PARTICULAR EXAMPLE, we're talking about a specific sort of abbreviation, not a generic shortening of the word.

So you're saying that "Mike" is an abbreviation?

I think the original intent of the thread was which school are recognized almost exclusively by their acronym version of the university.

Very true, but we're talking about schools who go by their acronyms, not nicknames. UConn is more of a nickname than anything else, and deserves its own category, like Carolina, Cal, etc.

The intent of the thread isn't wrong, however. It's merely the nomenclature of the thread.

shite, man, you admitted that you knew the intent of the thread above!

I'd think that most people, not just sports fans, would recognize UCLA, MIT, and NYU over any other abbreviated colleges. People never refer to those schools by their full names.

Mizzou isn't always called that in state.

I would say 90% of the time, it is.

But I'd say BYU or UCLA.
