Lots of reasons he could be in town other than taking the job. Maybe he is interested, but maybe he is playing the game and working on that raise at State.

You guys hear anything new lately?
Posted on 7/13/19 at 8:09 pm to D011ahbi11
I think Barry slowed down anything that would be happening around here. I'm sure the rumors will start to swirl early in the week

Yea, thought that may be the case

Anyone hearing any rumors?

dude give it a break. They at least 3 weeks away from naming someone.

I feel like it’s Deggs. It’s always going to be him. I think he would be a fool not to leave Sam Houston.
I also agree with a Rogers assessment of the ULL program. I’m a long-standing LSU fan, but I have great respect for the ULL baseball program and coach Rob. He will be missed.

What? Why would it take a month to hire a coach?

I'm very interested to see what will happen to the current assistant coaches. Does the new coach keep any of the assistants? If not does Babineaux move to an administrative position within the University?
Jake Wells would be a sought after assistant if he's not retained. He did a good job at Tech when he was there in 2015-16.

In similar fashion to previous searches, I will have no further public comment until the time arrives that we announce our new coach. Due to the notoriety and success of Louisiana Baseball, there will be great interest and speculation associated with this search. Thus, unless you hear information directly from me, please do not assume it to be accurate.

I like this, putting rumors in there place.

I know they've been somewhat successful and I know he can't say they're shite and has to sell his university. However, does ULL really have a ton of notoriety to where it would be a big nationwide search? I'm not trying to be a dick, although it probably comes off as I am. I'm just asking bc I'm really not too familiar with their potential candidates.

I do think it would be a great stop for someone who would like to go to a bigger program and see this as their opportunity to get more recognition while also being successful. Or, someone who would like to continue building what Robichaux already started. He was very successful there and has built something very nice, although their last season or 2 was subpar compared to where they were for a while.

Deggs would be a HR hire.
Most logical choice with a history of success at the school.
ULL's problem is that he can only be offered the job if he takes it. Too much riding on it if he declines.
Pretty delicate if you think about it. If Deggs stays at SH, it's beneficial to his program for it to be known that he did, and at the same time, crippling to ULL.
I am certain you won't hear anything from the ULL side unless it is favorable to them. I personally hope Deggs takes the job.

I could see Mississippi State giving him a raise to keep him. They are very motivated to keep him around. I won't pretend to know who Maggard is targeting though.
My own personal speculation was the Gautreau would wait on a P5 job.
But I heard some stuff on Friday from a guy in the industry that led me to believe Gautreau is the top target and that he's interested. It wasn't said outright that he was, but it sounded that way reading between the lines.
There wasn't any comment on any other candidates, but that's due more to the source than anything having to do with the other candidates.
So my speculation was wrong based on what someone tangentially related to the search process has said.

What kind of salary does head baseball coach at Sam Houston State or ULL make?
Posted on 7/16/19 at 1:35 pm to danilo
I think Sam Houston is paying more than what Robichaux got.
Robichaux had some incentives outside of salary, I think.
So, money could be a factor here.
But with the stadium renovations and the way things kinda got sideways there, it would be in their best interests to make him an offer he can't refuse.
Need to think long term.

Care to elaborate on what you heard without giving away your source? I have heard that they are actually pretty close to making an offer and/or announcement within the next week or so. So a lot of people might assume it's Deggs based on that, but if you heard good things about Gautreau on Friday, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's him. Either one would be a tremendous hire.

Basically, you know how when a hire like this is made every AD will make calls to guys they know to get their impressions on a candidate or two? This guy was reached out to about Gautreau and one other candidate who doesn't seem likely. But the focus was pretty much entirely on Gautreau.
Deggs wasn't a part of that conversation, from what I understand, but I would guess that's because this guy wouldn't have had as much crossover with him, at least recently.
So I could be reading more into it because of the source, but if it's not Gautreau, I would still feel good about whoever it is, because the AD is doing his homework.
And coming from where he did, the AD has connections at a TON of athletic depts across the country, so he's probably had similar conversations as he did with my guy about the different candidates.

Interesting info. I'd put money on it that Dr. Maggard has 2-3 Top Targets and he's vetting out all backgrounds. It still could be anyone at this point.
