Sidney Crosby broke Mario Lemieux's franchise scoring record with a goal and an assist in the first period of the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-3 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday night.
Crosby, who began the night one point behind Lemieux, now has 645 goals and 1,079 assists for 1,724 points in 1,387 games. It also moved him past Lemieux for the eighth-most points in NHL history.

Absolutely impossible to know, particularly when health matters once spring rolls around. It'll also come down, quite a bit actually, to how things look after the Olympic break and whether the Avalanche are still in a battle with Dallas for the division (as I expect), or if they've got enough room to rest some guys here-and-there (looking at Landy, for example, who I'm still amazed hasn't had a night off yet).
Not only that, but it is really hard to imagine this is the "peak" for the Avalanche with the PP being as bad as it is (it can't stay this bad forever, can it?) and LOC still not having played a game yet this year.
Having the best 1/2 punch in net, by far, in the league sure doesn't hurt, and that stretches back to last season when the trades were made.
Lots of hockey left to play, but there's still a chance the Avalanche have better hockey in front of them with this team than behind them (not talking record, but overall play - they've won more "ugly" games than I can remember since he Cup run - largely due to Blacky/Wedgie)... and that's scary.

Exactly this. It will be about injuries and team sports psychology . My fear is a loss of momentum with a long break. Injuries are of course just part of the deal.
As for the pieces, they stand to really improve when LOC comes back. Also the addition of Burns and the improved play by Malinski and Manson on the blue line has been great to see. They have been REALLY good in their own end. And the forward forecheck- especially Nichushkin- has been excellent.
And then of course they question is do you tinker/ trade at the deadline and risk chemistry? I’d say no- they really have all the pieces, and got a freebie with Brindley. And as you said, they’ve been doing all this with a subpar power play . Also all those OT losses aren’t a factor in the playoffs and I just think 5 on 5 they are by far the best team. Dallas, with Avs skins on the wall, lurks of course . But I’m enjoying the ride and crossing my fingers. Avs 2.0 is too good to only have one cup.

Am one of the Stars followers and have been pleasantly surprised at how well they have fared given the injuries to date. They seem to be more balanced than I can remember. I hope the loss of #91 doesn't hurt too much...have really enjoyed watching his game mature over the course of his career.

This thread has been disappointingly slow so far this season. Are not enough hockey fans posting this season compared to last?

In all honesty, it’s been dead since last year’s move to pinned threads at the bottom of the page. I think it was Metallica asking for it to go back to the top especially with Four Nations getting the hype it got.
Unfortunately, hockey is an afterthought to most posters here (which makes sense), but would definitely get more traffic and more viewership if this wound up top of page 1 on the MSB.

Good chance the Avs lose in regulation tonight
Had some lucky bounces for goals but just not looking sharp enough thus far

Finally a shootout win! This team is unreal.
That might have been game of the year so far - incredible entertainment.

Was at the game last night and it was incredible. Avs played sloppy/slow for 2 periods then flipped the switch. 17 SOG in the 3rd. The MacKinnon shootout goal was nice.

9 wins in a row for the Sabres.

85.5%.
A goal differential of 66 . Only 3 other teams are above 20 . Thats an absolutely ridiculous stat. The only team with under 100 goals against and it’s at 87 . By far leading the league in scoring and doing it across 4 lines.
And still the power play flounders. 0-4 against the Kings who have the 31st worst penalty kill before last night.
The upcoming Canes/Panthers/Lightning 3 game road trip in 4 days is gonna be extremely tough. Everyone is gunning for them now and those are some tricky teams squeezed together .

Absolutely. The schedule does, undoubtedly, loosen up from there though to the Olympics break as that is really the only stretch of 3-4 games that could be highlighted as treacherous.
A very favorable 7-game homestand following those 3 road games. Only one B2B (OTT then MTL on the road), and it's not hard to picture a scenario where the Avs are at or approaching 90 points by the break.
Which is insane and one would think there would be separation from Dallas at that point, but - hockey is hockey so who the hell knows!
