It's the best rivalry game every year.

I like this explanation.
You also understand how all of these players (except a rare one or two) are not only playing for their institutions (which are AMERICAN institutions funded by AMERICAN tax payers) but, after graduation, will be serving their country? In other words, serving YOU? Placing their lives on the line between you and the fanatics overseas who would like to pose for a picture with your severed head dangling from their hand?
So they play with class and for pride and for the honor of their (tax payer provided) institutions.
And you don't "get" it? In that case, I feel really bad for you and how utterly shallow and superficial you are.

and I can acknowledge that while also acknowledging that, as a football product, it's lacking
So you can only enjoy a game that is played by the most elite level of athletes?
So why do you watch college football again?

Calm down dude.... You are overreacting a bit.

For me as a former Navy brat, it's about the tradition, the men and women marching in before the game, the singing the alma maters after the game and just the pageantry of it. I get a lump in my throat every year. Oh, and this year it was about the awesome Navy helmets,
I appreciate years like this one where it was a close game.

You can confirm, but I suspect you're over 30.

I think the better question would have been to ask why nobody seems to care anywhere near as much about Army/Air Force and Navy/Air Force.

In that scenario, the answer for me is Army-Navy is the oldest rivalry of those but it is a fair question.

Appointment watching for me every year. Actually made the trip to the game in 2013. I would recommend it to every CFB fan to attend the game.
The pageantry is amazing an nothing but respect for the players and students of the academies. Most college kids, myself included, spend their weekends and summertime screwing off. These kids have plenty of options to spend their college experience and choose to serve.

The rivalries aren't as old, but growing up an Air Force brat, I can assure you those games matter too.
CBS Sports has done a decent job in recent years of hyping these when they happen, but since they get played earlier in the season, they get overshadowed by other games.

This.
It gives me a chance to tell my kids about my Grandfather, a Navy pilot, and that he is why we root for Navy.

there are a lot of good explanations in this thread...
and the Commandant of West Point was a center on the Army team around 35 years ago (if not a bit more)...
what you are seeing on the field and sidelines are a major portion of who will be flag officers 30 years from now...

I know the footage of corso as a Navy coach has been posted on this site elsewhere, but at the end of the clip, he gets at the true essence of the game. The military schools are the only school that are America's teams and the game impacts so many people. I apologize if it has already been posted in this thread, I skimmed through and didn't notice it, but you need to watch this clip if you haven't already.

There was a long period of time when Army & Navy were among college football's elite teams along with Notre Dame, Oklahoma, et al.

On November 27, 1926, the Army–Navy Game was held in Chicago for the National Dedication of Soldier Field as a monument to American servicemen who had fought in World War I. Navy came to the game undefeated, while West Point had only lost to Notre Dame, so the game would decide the National Championship. Played before a crowd of over 100,000, the teams fought to a 21–21 tie, but Navy was awarded the national championship.[18]
In both the 1944 and 1945 contests, Army and Navy entered the game ranked #1 and #2 respectively.[19] The 1945 game was labeled the "game of the century" before it was played. Army defeated a 7–0–1 Navy team 32–13. Navy's lone tie was against Notre Dame.[20]

There was also a time when Tulane was an elite team.

Yeah, that Tulane-LSU rivalry ranks right up there with the best of them.

It's special, the dedication, the commitment these guys show is awesome. The discipline, the fact that few if any of them will play, or could play pro ball. They will be defending our country, so it deserves all it gets in my mind. One of the few games I watch every snap of. Go Navy!!
Posted on 12/12/15 at 11:20 pm to Henry Jones Jr
For me it is just great to watch a game where the guys on the field are motivated more by pride and honor than trying to use college as a stepping stone to the NFL.
