I agree with Phil 100% but I disagree with making those comments at the presser right after. He is usually good at staying classy no matter what but he was clearly passed and my guess is he represents the majority opinion in that locker room.

I take it as Phil didn't want to talk behind Watson's back. He felt strong enough about his opinion to say it with Watson sitting a few chairs down from him. That's more manly than waiting until everyone is gone and then privately telling some golf writer how he feels.

I'm going to have to agree with this considering nobody stepped in to make peace during this exchange. It would have been real easy for someone like Furyk, or Zach Johnson to interrupt and say, "I think we all are disappointed, we all think that we could have done things better. I could have made more birdies, maybe Tom feels that he could have made a different lineup, but at the end of the day, the European players just outplayed us on the course." However, nobody stepped in to say that.

It was over way before his 10-6 update.

I really don't think Watson had much of a real plan or strategy. Azinger went to great lengths to construct his team.

I think all 12 should be hand picked. Or change the automatic qualifications. I would like to see more young guns.

I think they did change them this time around from 10 automatic qualifiers to 9. I think it's a step in the right direction but I'd like to see more captain's picks. Maybe not all 12 but 4 or 5 would be good.

Idk if this has been discussed in this thread but I wonder when they are going to cut off for qualifying for the team in 2016 with the Olympics. I think 8 qualifiers and 4 captain's picks would be perfect.

they should take 7 autos and 5 captain picks. the auto qualifiers should be more heavily weighted on end of the year performance (from Players to Fedex playoffs)

I Kige all that. Also it should not depend on anything from the previous year. Under the current system, you get points for the previous year's majors.

5 captain picks

I'm good with that, as long as Tom Watson isn't the captain making the picks.

How about if the captain were required to take 8 of the top 12 in the point system, and then is free to take 4 additional picks regardless of points. That way we can leave Jim Furyk and guys like him at home.

I can see the benefit of that but I don't think the players would ever agree to it. They wouldn't want to play their way onto the list and then still have to sweat out a captain's pick.

Then the only answer is to eliminate automatic qualifying entirely. I think the players would agree that the current system isn't working.

I don't think the players would agree to that either and maybe it puts too much power in the captain's hands. Is our failure in the Ryder Cup over the last couple of decades a failure of the system or is it just that the Euros are better than we are. I think to a large extent it's the latter.

We have been dominated since they added the rest of Europe to GBR & IRL. Maybe we should get to add Canadian and S. American players to make it more fair. I'd love to have Angel Cabrera on our team!
