Competition? They're horses and don't know they are in a competitive race.
Its too late to link to a bunch of stuff to prove it - but you are wrong about that.

I agree horse enthusiasts believe it. Shoot, some believe that, not only does a horse know he or she is in a race to win, but that he or she actually knows just how good the horses are that he or she is up against.

Many horses, even in the wild, instinctively try and catch up to other horses to slow them down, but they generally don't try and pass them.

Why is this this post even made? Who cares? They were both great horses and won the triple crown. The times indicate AP may have had some work to do to beat Secretariat but who knows and cares?

Can we just agree that both are really good?

No

Horses are faster, bigger and stronger than ever.
Bigger does not mean faster. As size increases, so does weight which requires more energy to propel it. I saw Northern Dancer in person and nobody would say it was a big horse.

Anyone who thinks otherwise is just being nostalgic
Clocks are not nostalgic when recording times. Since 2000 only 2 horses broke the Top 10 for Belmont time. One was 2001 and the other was 2015. Neither was in the Top 5 so by the non emotional clock the 80's were the peak of speed and numbers.

I would also take Khartoum by a head over American Pharoah.

Yeah? How many horses have broken Secretariats records.

He's in his own category-no comparison
Wrong!
Man O War is right there with Secretariat. I tend to lean to Man O War due to him running longer races and carrying more weight. Man O War also produced more winners than Secretariat as a breeder.
Also, not only does enlarged hearts help but longer strides are big.
Secretariat and Man O War had freakishly long strides.

If you go by times in the Triple Crown races, Secretariat has Man O'War beat pretty bad. In the Belmont Stakes, Man O'War ran a time of 2:14:20 in 1 3/8 of a mile. If you convert that to 1.5 miles, Man O'War's time would have been 2:26:40 which is a tremendous time. However, that is still almost 2.5 seconds behind Secretariat's time of 2:24:00 for a gap of over 10 lengths. In the Preakness, Man O'War ran a time of 1:51:60 in 1 1/8 miles. That would have been a time of 1:57:80 in 1 3/16 miles. It was a pretty good time for its day. However, Secretariat ran it in 1:53:00. That's a huge gap. Also, Nobody has broken Secretariat's record in over 40 years while three horses in the following 28 years would run faster than Man O'War's projected time of 1:57:80. Also, somebody like to bring up Phar Lap, the Australian race horse. Well, his times were slower than Secretariat's as well. His fastest time for a 1 1/4 mile was 2:03:00. The Kentucky Derby is 1 1/4 mile and Secretariat's time at that race was 1:59:40. Phar Lap's fastest time at 1.5 miles was 2:29:00 which is five seconds slower than Secretariat's Belmont Stakes time at 2:24:00. Anyway you cut it, Secretariat is the greatest horse of all-time. The closest horse to being as good as Secretariat was probably Easy Goer. His Belmont Stakes times is the second fastest ever for a horse after Secretariat. He ran one of the fastest times ever in the Preakness even though he ended up losing by a nose. He broke Secretariat's Gotham Stakes record and ran some of the fastest times ever in numerous other races. His main issue was that he lost two of the three Triple Crown races as well as the Breeders Cup to Sunday Silence. A lot of people feel like that was due to the mistakes from the jockey and it probably was. If he had a different jockey and better luck in the bigger races, Easy Goer would have undoubtedly been considered among the top two or three racehorses ever.

True but he won by 20 lengths and the jockey eased him up down the stretch like most of his races.
You can't compare the two's times because:
1) Man O War wasn't racing a clock but other horses and he usually dominated in such a way that he was seldom pushed.
2) Man O War carried more weight than Secretariat. Secretariat never carried more than 126 lbs. Man O War seldom carried less than 126 lbs and carried up to 138 lbs.
To me they are the 2 greatest.

Easy Goer wasn't even the best horse in horse in his own fricking stable at the time lol (Personal Ensign) let alone the 2nd best horse of all time
Easy Goer, who i am a fan of, ran his eyeballs out in one race over a track he trained on for his entire life (Belmont) and got thumped by sunday silence everywher else

Man o War is generally considered to be the GOAT horse by horse racing critics.
The "Triple Crown" wasn't really a thing during his time, so that's kind of a myopic way to measure them.
Secretariat definitely had the most dominant triple crown and is more well known to the general public.

yeah man'o war was so god he had to basically retire becuase no one would run against him anymore. he won a race by 100 lengths.

Yeah his last race was against Sir Barton (HOFer and recognized as 1st Triple Crown winner) who he easily beat by 7 lengths over 1 1/4 miles.
