when you are running full speed right at someone who is running full speed, it's kind of instinctive to just drop your shoulder in his chest, almost bracing yourself for the collision.

the receiver naturally ducks his head. the target goes from the center of his chest to his head.

there may be some helment-helmet contact, but that's b/c the receiver ducked his head more than anything else

No, but if i were Carroll i would have punished him somehow for going for the big hit and not the tackle and thereby hitting your own teammate worse than the PSU guy, frickin Karnell Hatcher shite there.

Old school definition:
Spearing is intentional use of the helmet (including the face mask) in an attempt to punish an opponent.”
College officials had difficulty enforcing the vague rule so they made adjustments to the wording to cover a broader range of unnecessary violence in these collisions. Removing "intentional" from the wording and focusing on high hits regardless of helmet positioning. A player launching himself (i.e. leaving his feet) was also a visual key given to officials to make this judgement call.
2004 Rule Change
It's amateur athletics and as much as we like the big hits its nice to have them walk off the field.

MAY be? The receiver's fault? GTFO and watch it again!

Spearing is leading with the top of your helmet...which is even more dangerous to the tackler

I miss the days of football where defense mattered and the rules weren't catered to offense.
No way is that hit dirty or should have been illegal. That was a vicious hit from a vicious, hard-hitting safety, in order to prevent the receiver from catching the ball. Those are the type of hits that makes the other receivers start hearing "footsteps" when they come across the middle.

He led with his shoulder to the head. So yeah, it should be penalized.
BTW, it was hits like that which got Chuck Cecil black balled.

Hey macho man: Tell that to the family of a player that is dealing with post-concussion syndrome and dementia or committed suicide because it was easier than dealing with the complications of repetitive brain injury trauma.

quote:hey pussy, its a violent contact sport played by guys who have the bodies of Gods and can run with deer. You know what you sign up for when you play the sport. Hell, you know what you sign up for when you play receiver. People with your line of thinking is why this sport will be fricking flag football in 30 years. With the technology we have today in helmets and padding, those are symptons and illnesses you won't see when our generation of players get old.

Looks like it is a close call there. Seems like the shoulder and helmet engage at about the same time. Whether he made contact with one before the other is difficult to tell.
I guess that makes it a borderline call, and it looked violent, so it got called.
To his credit, it does look like Mays made an effort to avoid helmet to helmet contact, unsuccessfully.

Blatant spearing - Major Wright vs. OU
I couldn't believe this wasn't called. It was a malicious play. Notice Wright delayed his celebration until after he was sure there were no flags. Punk.

Carroll did punish him by not drafting him and drafting the guy from Texas instead.
But seriously, the big hit is Mays' MO, and is one of the main reasons why he isn't better at playing safety. He could be the best.

Agreed, always remember him for getting run over by Jacob Hester in 2007 though

We have the benefit of instant replay. This shite happened fast as hell in real time with the refs being several yards away. Based on the sound of helmets colliding and the aftermath, you have to make the call... correct or not.

Specifically, the crown of the helmet. It is 100% not spearing, IMO. CFB refs are just bitches and throw flags on anything that looks "too violent" for their tastes.

Yes, he launched himself at a defensless players head. And for you retards that say shite like "this aint no pussy ball, obama wants to take our guns" blah blah blah, try taking a hit from Taylor Mays and THEN you can argue
