Found this about the Dallas on the uni’s. Rebranding and marketing trying to be known as Dallas’ home team.
Helmet: The famous Triple D interlocked with the timeless SMU Pony symbolizes the unity between the city of Dallas and SMU. Helmet/jersey stripe: The stripe featured on the helmet and jersey sleeves pay homage to the Dallas Cowboys. Number/pant stripe: The number and pant stripe pay tribute to the 1966 Dallas Cowboys, led by quarterback and SMU alum Don Meredith. Dallas script: The script 'Dallas' featured on the chest pays homage to SMU alumni and AFL founder Lamar Hunt and the Dallas Texans."

IIRC that started when June Jones got there. They've been trying like crazy to increase their fanbase in Dallas. Not sure how well it's working but at least they are trying.
I didn't realize that Tulane hadn't beaten SMU since 2012. No wonder my brother is so amed up.
