He was only offsides if it was blocked. Like they only call entering the lane early on a free throw if the shooter misses.

The guy I know who refs small time college football has told me that at ref clinics where lots of NFL refs attend, they always talk about how the higher ups drop little nuggets such as “how great would it be to have Mahomes and Rodgers in the SB”, etc....
