I just watched the replay, he did a great job on the hold. Tough snap to catch and get that ball down.

Stupid fricking coach didn't realize they got the timeout back, since the helmet penalty happened. He thought they were still charged the timeout.
I will say this, my mind is changing. If st Charles called timeout, the player can remove his helmet....its a timeout....gear can be removed.
In the video, the fatass coach can be seen holding up fingers, not sure of timeout count.
Could be refs fault, who's job it is to tell the coach the timeout was returned to the other team.

Shaw up 21-14 with 35 seconds left when the comets punch it in to make it 21-20. Kicker misses PAT then the onside kick is unsuccessful. Shaw has the ball with 35 seconds and the comets only have two timeouts left. it’s essentially over, right? Nope.
Shaw center gets post play personal foul for taking off his helmet which stops the clock without having to use a TO. Shaw kneels twice, and the comets call their timeouts. Shaw punter shanks a punt giving the comets the ball in Shaw territory. Comets run a couple of plays to set up a 44 yard FG with 10 seconds left. Comets kicker redeems himself and absolutely crushed the FG. Comets win state title and Shaw left with their hearts broken. I hope the team and coaches rally around #50 the center.

Agreed. BUT, if the refs signaled timeout at any point, then it is their explicit job to make sure the coaches know the timeout was not burned.
Im telling you, that side judge next to that teams bench, is responsible for that communication from the head referee
