Guessing you missed the game last night where he stroked 2 16-footers? Anthony Davis couldn't shoot for shite as a college Freshman

Manning was a great shooter he had a 15 footer that was automatic

If you watched him as a Freshman they played him at 3 and 4 as Dreiling was the 5. They moved him to 5 as a Sophomore. A jump shot doesn't have to be a 3 point shot.

I love all the "why is Ben Simmons the consensus top pick in the draft? I just don't see it." threads

Gee, it's too bad there aren't more scouting and personnel dept. openings in the NBA

You have to take him just off potential

I think if a team like Dallas got first pick the replacement for Dirk is there.

While I don't think Simmons is the best player in college he is undoubtably the first pick.

You say that like he's just a physical specimen and he hasn't shown much on the court

He's been awesome this season, he'll get picked #1 for more than just his upside. He's got skills already.

He is averaging 20, 13 and 5. Find a college freshman that has done that recently.

Beasely averaged 26 and 12.5

Durant averaged 26 and 11

Carmelo, 22 and 10

And what about the assist? Do you knuckle draggers not realize that is a huge part of the hype?

20, 13 AND 5

ETA: also, all those guys were freaking hyped as well. So OP still makes no sense

You're completely leaving a category off. A huge category at that. 5 assists a game in college is the equivalent to like 8-9 in the NBA.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve the hype (it's a little over the top to be honest)

But showing that he is in good company with other former freshman...and future stars like Durant and Melo.

Although Melo did drag his team to the title on his back as a frosh. Doubt Simmons does that...by any stretch of the imagination...even if they make the tourney some how.

It's not all roses from ESPN though.

There was a big article on ESPN today on how Simmons chokes and fades at the end of games and that's why LSU's record isn't what it should be.

quote:

One coach, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said his team practically made Simmons' hesitation to take the shot part of their game plan. Their defensive focus was to make sure Quarterman and Keith Hornsby didn't hurt them because they didn't think Simmons would be aggressive enough to do so.

"It's not like he has that Kobe (Bryant), alpha male, rip-your-throat-out mentality, he's a pretty happy go-lucky kid that's horsing around before a game having fun," he said. "I just think he's more comfortable as a make-the-right-play guy."

This is a topic that if you can't see the greatness, then you never will.

And Melo was great, but Gerry McNamara was one of the best college PG's in the last decade, and a guy named Hakim Warrick was alright. To say he had nobody is hilarious

Ben is the best pro prospect

Agree here. His game reminds me of the style of Boris Diaw and Kyle Anderson.

His game will translate nicely at the next level.

I vehemently disagree with the notion that Gerry McNamara was one of the best college point guards of the last decade

I rank it
Dunn
Heild
Simmons

But as I have said Simmons will be first player taken.

I'm going to catch hell for this but Simmons is another Corey Brewer. He doesn't always show up big at times but he's the best player usually on the court (NCAA) and when he decides it's time to go he shows up. Simmons just doesn't have a Humphrey type shooter to help as much.

AD couldn't shoot in college either. Simmons has a good stroke, he'll develop a shot at the next level

Shouldn't he be attempting to shoot one at this stage?
The guy has world class court awareness and ball skills, but I'd like to see him shoot a few 15 footers.

He's basically the only interior offense LSU has. And the way we are coached, if he starts taking some shots like that, then the closest person to the paint besides Simmons will be outside the 3 point line

And he hit a couple of those 15 footers against Oklahoma if memory serves me right. Definitely hit one in the first quarter
