I've always liked Chipper's swing.

I'd say Cano. Also Pujols, Mauer, and Justin Upton have nice swings.

the "machine" nickname really fits pujols... it's not effortless like a griffey and it's not violent/powerful like a bo jackson... it's just controlled along the right plane to make perfect contact

In regards to Upton, I don't care that he's not really producing this year.

He just never came to mind as having the prettiest swing. Maybe it's his front leg action distracting from his swing. And maybe it's just left hand swing prejudice when it comes to sweet swingers.

Upton's swing.

One thing I never got with Pujols is the extreme knee bend he has at the plate, especially for such a big guy.

Has he ever said what the deep knee bend thing does for his swing?

Aaron Hill. When Jim Edmonds hits a HR, his swing is usually pretty legit.

Hard to say, Griffey's will always be the best. Not sure whose looks as smooth as his now as an active player.

Darryl Strawberry. I'd actually rank Darryl #1 because his whole plate persona was so badass

this

For fear and just badassness in his prime I might also take Albert Belle.

Do any right handers have an identical or very similar swing to Griffey? His is so smooth, I remember trying to imitate the motion as a kid but it didn't look right as a right hander.

Since I didn't get a response about Pujols' bent-knee batting stance and swing, I went searching and found this comment on the evolution of the batting stance from the crouching stances of the 1970's to the more upright upper body stances of today. It's probably too long for most to read, so this is the jist of it.

quote:

Modern batting stances are "yogic," something like chair pose in that respect. And although the commentators don't discuss it, this body positioning is a major part of an approach to hitting that generates more power. Hitter's today increase their bat speed with body torque. The hips begin aligned at approximately right angles to the path of the ball, then swivel toward the ball. The upper torso and shoulders swivel slightly behind, followed by the swiveling of the arms. This segmented torquing creates a mechanical advantage, with each segment -- hips, torso, arms moving with greater force and speed since they travel a greater distance through the same arc, like the difference between the handle and the end of a whip. All this generates a lot of power. If you don't believe me, look at Albert Pujols, today's most feared hitter. His stance has the most pronounced knee bend combined with upright torso. But all hitters do some version of this now.

I don't know if his swing qualifies as "pretty", but he has maybe the best mechanical swing in baseball. Great balance, hips and shoulders square, head still, no hitching or looping, great extension. Have a look.

Pujols' swing.
