Really sucks that the younger generations don’t want to see westerns and studios don’t make them anymore. For me that era of American history is fascinating and the movies made about them are mostly great.
I watched the 50s movie & like the 2007 version better. Great cast of actors.

The original is my second favorite western of all time

The remake - meh

The original is a stark, B&W character study.

To place it in context: It was to star Glenn Ford as the hero. Ford was a WWII veteran and tough guy action star.

The antagonist was to be played by Van Heflin, one of Hollywood top character actors (he's the rancher in Shane) who often played roguish cads & morally ambiguous villains, as well as an occasional vacillating hero. This would have been the expected, conventional casting.

However, at some point Ford asked to switch roles, which the studio agreed to do. This meant Ford would be the charming villain, while Heflin was the indecisive hero.

Which leads to one of my favorite moments in a western: in the hotel room, Heflin ponders the bribe offer to turn Ford loose. Of course John Wayne would reject the bribe (& maybe punch the villain too). But Heflin says, "How do I know you'll keep your word?" Meaning he's actually considering taking the money - something heroes just didn't do in 1957.

Delmer Daves was one of the great western directors. And this will be be dismissed as nostalgia, but IMHO Ford & Heflin simply had more screen presence than the leads in the remake.

The 2007 version is one of my favorite movies of any genre. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe are 2 of the best actors alive and seeing them play off each other was amazing. And like everything else Ben Foster does he almost steals every scene he's in.

You are absolutely on point talking about the original. It is a great movie and one of the best westerns of all time. Ford and Heflin were perfect in those roles.

I think you sell the remake a little short, could it be because you compare it to the original which is so great? It’s a good, but not great, movie in its own right. It does suffer a bit from the modern movie trend of having to dumb down things for the audience.

The other thing I’d point out in comparing the ordinal to the remake is, in the newer version you get to see tremendous modern actors in Bale and Crowe - but you realize throughout they are acting. You can throw Foster in there too. With Ford, Heflin and Richard Jaekel, you actually felt that they were the characters…and not in a John Wayne Cary Grant kind of “they were just playing themselves” way.

You are entitled to your opinion regardless of how wrong it is. The remake is freaking awesome, and it is one of the rare instances of such.

I'll have to respectfully disagree on this point. Westerns are still being made albeit at a lesser rate than when they ruled, but there have been some great examples in the past few years including Old Henry, The Hateful Eight, The Magnificent Seven, Power of the Dog, etc. Horizon and The Dead Don't Hurt with Viggo Mortenson just hit the theaters.

Lots of Television shows in the genre to appreciate as well in the last few years.

Like any genre their popularity is cyclical but at least they are still being produced with some quality.
