I always get to these threads late.

Anyway: DDL, Downey, Jr., Oldman, Streep, Ledger (great loss), Kate Winslet all come to mind.

Robert Duvall

thats a nice late entry. he pretty much makes any movie he is in better. but dont know if "range" is the best way to describe his acting.

Morgan Freeman

i think your missing the point. great actor. not much range.

quote:

Harrison Ford

to me.... one of the worst actors of our time. dont get me wrong, he was PERFECT, for star wars, but outside of that he was pretty terrible.

I forgot Robert Downey Jr. Can play tons of different types of characters. his austrailian accents in NBK and in Tropic Thunder are great

so he can play TONS of different characters but he uses the same accent in the two you describe. hmm

Charlie Chaplin

i really want to see this, i amagine he is great in it.

quote:

an Austrailian actor playing a black soldier

the painted him as a black guy and he used a deep voice. pretty much any actor could do that role.

quote:

Iron Man

he was made for that role. he played himself. a cocky bastard. he was great in it..... but it didnt show any range.

quote:

Sherlock Holmes

looks great in this as well

i like downey jr. but everybody is on his bandwagon right now. he good but not great and doesnt have all that much range. sorry

I'm shocked nobody mentioned Alec Baldwin. He's who I think of second when I think of "range" behind only Philip Seymour-Hofman

I'm not a huge fan of Will Smith but I think he is underrated as well.

Gotta disagree here. Other than Depp's retarded brother in "...Gilbert Grape" when has Leo stepped outside of the norm?

Basketball Diaries, The Island, and Gilbert Grape were all very different from his traditional roles.

He's a great young actor and deserves his props.

Says the guy who hasn't seen Charlie Chaplin. If anyone has a bandwagon it's friggin' Johnny Depp. He's "up" for every single role, he's the "best actor now" with "great range." Any thread talking about actors there is a Johnny Depp mention. Any new role, Johnny Depp. Just read the boards to find out.

He's a talented actor and he's fun to watch sometimes, but he's not "great," and not perfect for any and every role.

Seriously, Robert Downey Jr. made a pile of money with Iron Man, but he doesn't have a big following.

Top living concerning this question is the implied meaning. And what kind of proof are you looking for?

Tiger Ryno already listed Oldman's roles, Sid Vicious, Dracula, Stansfield, Fifth Element, Lt. Gordon, the list goes on and on. He is invisible in every role that he plays.

In terms of Streep, Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice, Adaptation, Doubt,A River Wild....the list goes on and on as well. She's a talented actress who has played tons of different types of female leads.

The only modern actress close might be Glenn Close. Cate Blanchett and Winslet have chances to get up there with them.

Apparently you're advice on how to measure good acting hasn't quite payed off yet.

But in regards to Russell Crowe, he plays a different character with a different personality in every movie.

Gladiator
American Gangster
Body of Lies
A Beautiful Mind
eta: Cinderella Man

yes Depp has a bigger bandwagon. But he has proven that he can be a bas arse actor. and play some pretty cool roles.

agreed. but my whole point with him is what has he been GREAT in? it wasnt hard for him to be good in iron man, that didnt show any range. if you say tropic thunder showed range then you are retarted. owen wilson was guna play that role. it wasnt a diffulcult role to play. sherlock looks like it could be good but i put money on it jude law outshines him.

so i havent seen chaplin, maybe he was great in that. thats still only one thing.
