The book is horrifying.
Does the movie not follow the book? Haven't read it.

Less white males I imagine as well though could be wrong lol
You're not wrong. They're doing this so that they can neuter the White male lead character that made such meme magic.

They are allegedly trying to make a more faithful adaptation of the book I think
Many such coping mechanisms for unnecessary remakes

Will the remake also be set in the 80's? If not, I don't see the message working today,
You don't think they could do a similar parody of excess for today? The era of influencers, only fans, streamers, $100 SUVs, etc.?

The intended parody of the original work already did that.

I suppose, but the novel and the first film are set in the same universe as Less Than Zero, The Rules of Attraction, Glamorama, etc. Those stories were so deeply rooted in 80's culture that it seems odd to try telling them in the present day.

The Rules of Attraction
The movie is set in the then-present late 90s. Like every ellis adaptation, it is faithful in spirit and tone with some minor plot liberties taken. The film is better than the novel. Ellis' stuff can be moved through time no problem.

Most people considered the movie pretty faithful, but it left out some of the gorier, really psycho details that are kind of nauseating to read. You can search around for spoilers or summaries if you want. I think the book gives more reason to think that Bateman is just losing his shite and imagining things as some sort of "high minded" commentary on capitalism and consumerism.

I enjoyed the novel but thought the movie pretty much sucked. Casting that guy from Dawson's Creek was a mistake IMO.

Why would they remake that film? It was perfect.
