Saw it Saturday night. I thought it was pretty good. We both enjoyed it. Spoiler-ish info follows...
It was pretty corny at times though. Some of the dialogue was terrible, and some parts seemed to be directly taken from other movies.
The whole "They're using our own radio signals against us" thing, a la Independence Day. Also, the whole "Nice job of taking it down. We're sending the method to every single city where these things are.." was Independence Day as well. The end was almost the identical scene from Black Hawk Down. Etc.
Back on the dialogue...some of it was just laughable. Twice in the movie, there were lines of "never seen that before"-type stuff. When they were dissecting the alien, ya boy was like "There's no frontal lobe...no temporal lobe...I've never seen anything like this before." Well, no shite. It's a fricking alien from another planet. Same thing when one of the guys was talking about the aliens and their aircraft. "We've never seen anything like this before.." Again, of course not...they're ALIENS. Just stupid, stupid lines.
I was also on the "Why would they be using weaponry that is almost identical (even if more advanced) to ours..?" bandwagon. Just didn't make sense to me really. I also didn't like how horrible of shots the aliens were...half the time they couldn't hit shite.
That being said though, I still enjoyed it a lot and thought it was decently solid. I think I may have had my expectations set a little too high going into it, but it was definitely worth the price of admission, and Im glad I saw it.

that's what i though initially
maybe you missed the 4 minutes on screen of 2-face disecting the alien trying to find that weakness (TO THE RIGHT OF THE HEART!)
if you didn't, please look for it on re-watch
I noticed it and it made complete sense. They knew nothing about their enemy and to conserve ammo, they were looking for the weakest spot on the body to maximize the impact of their fire on them. Makes perfect sense to me as that is what the military does.: Finds weaknesses and exploits them.
quote:
uh, radios
maybe you missed it, but there was a scene when our super hero figured out they were using our radio waves to analyze our tactics. he had everybody turn the radios off, then actually made a BOMB out of it.
if you didn't catch it, please look for it on re-watch
They weren't really using them against us as much as they were using them to find us. It's not like they weaponized them. Hell we actually weaponized our radios.
quote:
i'd call that command center death star-esque
or it's at least, "SHOOT THE ALIENS IN THEIR SHIP'S shite HOLE AFTER RANDY QUAID SHOWED US HOW TO!"
That command center was nowhere near Death Star size. That sumbitch fit into a couple of city blocks. Tiger Stadium was bigger than it.

it devolved into your standard alien invasion movie
No it didn't, but okay.

ok?
so no plane flew over that area again?
1. The only part of the thing that was visible on the surface was their antenna.
2. What plane was suppose to notice it? We had jets and we had transport helicopters. Jets were their to frick shite up, not scan the ground for antennas we didn't even know existed. Transport helicopters were to get in and get out. Not to look around the area for shite.

unless it was built underground, that huge arse piece of machinery had to get in there somehow

is that why he stabbed the alien about 15 times to no avail? did you even listen? he kept saying shite like, "WE HAVE TO FIND OUT HOW TO KILL THIS THING!"

i thought it was pretty clear that the thing was huge, and they had the sat photos of it.. but MRs character said they lost it when they got ambushed..
i guess by the time it was moved underground, they had already taken the air.. remember that we couldnt even pull off a high level carpet bombing once they took the air..
one thing that is a weird movie concept is that the aliens put so much focus on their command and control centers.. did this in ID also.. why not have an alien fly the aircraft, that way its not dependent upon the CC thing.. same in ID, why have all of your shields for everything in your arsenal tie back to one ship? but really, all this is explained by the fact that its a movie, and there has to be some way for us to win..

i really had hopes that BLA wouldn't have this "HOLY shite THEY CANNOT BE STOPPED!" theme
at first it looked like the humans could kill the shite out of the aliens, and i was pretty pumped at what i was going to see
but, it devolved into the "CANNOT BE STOPPED" stuff. which necessitates a silly weakness to take them down. it's the formula.

It could have been rammed down in there. We weren't shown how it got there, so I'm not going to make a big deal about it. It happened off screen from the group that we as the audience were following. Maybe some other soldiers did notice it. Maybe they had no idea what it was. Maybe they did try to scout it. Who knows.

It's not like it was the first thing they brought it. They had their ground troops fricking shite up. Our troops were more taken aback by a completely foreign enemy and figuring out what their weaknesses were and pushing them back then they were finding one antenna in a area that was completely wiped out. Even with that, they did send at least one recon team out and from what we were told, they were decimated.

What the hell are you even arguing about? If you came across a completely alien enemy that you knew nothing about, then yes you are going to try to find out it's weaknesses as best as possible to figure out how to kill them in the most efficient manner. That's how our military works man. Study your enemy, find their weakness, exploit the holy hell out of it.

They were damaged by our bullets, but they were looking for maximum impact. Why use up an entire clip if you can wipe them out with 1 or 2 well placed shots. Not all of the aliens were identical or had the same armor either, but we had to have a general idea of their weakest part of their anatomy.

OOm poppa wow wow. Your point?

Wow Jake, you really have no concept of size do you? That thing was in a few city blocks at most. The Death Star was about the size of all of LA county and then some.
From Wookiepedia, a group of Star Wars nerdlings who know more than you and I about the size of the Death Star:
quote:
The first Death Star was 160 kilometers in diameter,[1][2] while the second Death Star was 900 kilometers in diameter.
quote:
yes, it did
No it didn't Jake. You are being ignorant and you know it.
quote:
but you obviously didn't pay attention to the movie
I obviously paid more attention than you did. You only saw what you wanted to see rather than what was actually happening.

Wow.
We were able to kill them. Hell they were able to whip our arse for two reasons in the beginning:: They obviously had at least some knowledge of our weaponry beforehand and they had the clear element of surprise. If we knew they were coming and knew of their intentions and had any idea of their weaknesses and strengths, that battle would have been a lot closer from the beginning. They weren't some invincible gods from beyond. I personally prefer the aliens not to be some unstoppable force.
Their "weakness" was nowhere near ID4 weakness. We found and took out one drone command center in one city. They still had various ground troops. Like another poster said, the aliens weren't really here to take over Earth as much as they were here to snag up our water. This is why they focused their attacks near beaches. They wanted to keep our military at bay, over land while they sucked up our water.

my GF and I saw it last night - it had its flaws, as does just about any film that comes out - I personally enjoyed the hell out of it.

I enjoyed it as well. As usual I see the snobs are out in full force trying to look cool by hating on the current popular movie.

No I just hate it when a marketing uses every good scene in the trailer and has zilch left to play in the movie. I was expecting non-stop action instead ended up with predictable monologue.

Name me a single movie that is literally non-stop action from start to finish with no downtime.

you keep saying "in the most efficient manner" when it is "how to kill them with guns. period"
do humans have a single weak point when attempting to kill them?

the motherfricker was stabbed with a big arse knife like 15 times without damage

like the 15 stabs having no effect on the aliens until 2-face found "the sweet spot"
?

beaches = ports = populated cities
why didn't they just land in the middle of the pacific ocean? no invasion necessary, and attack would be unlikely

Defense in depth.
We would fight back.
You don't want the front line to be your harvesting operations.
And based off of what we heard....they were using the coastal cities as the hubs to harvest the water anyway.

You can not be this dense Jake. We didn't know shite about their anatomy. They dissected that alien to find out what the weakest point on its body was so that they could kill him the quickest/easiest/most efficiently.
Why can you not understand this basic logic?
quote:
the motherfricker was stabbed with a big arse knife like 15 times without damage
Which is why they dissected him. Damn son.

If I shot your feet 5 times, you still would live.
If I shot you in the forehead/heart 5 times, you would die.
Why you can't understand that our troops who had never encountered this enemy before would take the time to figure out the weakest part or at least one of the weakest parts of their body is beyond understanding.
It's pretty clear that you are a stereotypical movie snob. Run along and jack off to The King's Speech.

So where would they have placed their ground troops? Command center?
If they had just thrown their drills/water suckers out in the middle of an ocean with little to no guard on them, we would have just sent a shitload of jets/carriers/subs over there to frick their shite up.
