How did you feel about Frodo, Sam, Pippin, Merry, Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn, and Galndalf all surviving at the end of Lord of the Rings even though they all made it through incredible odds over and over? The only person from the original fellowship who dies is Boromir and that was in the first movie in the series.

Still sad he was so miscast instead of being Robert 2.0.

Didn't care because that was LOTR

This is GOT where, like Ben said, literally any major character could die at any second. Which made the first 6 seasons so much fun.

Halfway through the battle, Brieanne, one handed Jaime, fighting for real for the very first time Pod, Sam (lol), Tormund, Greyworm, Jon, Sansa, Tyrion, etc are either completely surrounded or pinned against a wall about to die. Then 30 min later, they all come out unscathed? Ok

They've been building up Theon's death for weeks. No shock there. And Jorah just got gradually cut up so there was never really a "well damn" moment.

Like I said last night, fun episode, but holy shite it could have been so much better if the writing wasn't so lazy.

but I agree on his view that no one of real significance died.
What are we even doing when we say Theon/Jorah/Melisandre aren't significant characters?

I mean it’s objectively true. But really, it’s ok. They’ll die soon enough. Just wait a few weeks. They’ll die.

So you want more realism from your dragons and titles show. Got it.

I thought the army of the dead was THE major plotline and THE overall point of the show. Now that's over. The white walkers didn't put up a fight or even fight (At all). Only the wights even faught. The white walkers just sat back while Arya gets a cheap shot on the night king who's now gone just like that with 3 episodes still left to draw out the last scene with cersei.

I suppose the alternative was to have the fight against Cercei first, and then turn to face the white walkers. I don’t think it matter much. There was going to be two separate battles either way.

Ser Beric was one of the most important characters in the entire story.

I think Melisandre had a grand total of 6 min of screen time the past 2 seasons.

I think that's right. In fact I think it was a fundamental violation of the premise of GRR Martin's writing.

In normal fantasy (and most spy novels and other hero driven fiction) the tension is ultimately limited because important characters typically survive when they should die. The first book (and the first season based upon the book) established that Martin felt differently about fantasy. When it made sense for Ned to die, he died.

They could have stepped down the spectacle and overwhelming onslaught that hit Winterfell and plausibly avoided this critique, but the nature of the conflict means more should have died.

I thought the best moment in the episode was when the Dothrakis' swords were lit, they charge into battle... and then one by one the lights go out. That was exactly what they were up against and the result that would have been predicted. I thought Bran might use some end of world magic intervention and warg into wolves and dragons to fight magical power with magical power - but they didn't really do that - and the conflict as it was depicted should have resulted in at least 75% of the major characters in Winterfell ending up like Lady Mormont.

Jorah and Theon have been relevant characters since literally the first episode of the series. Jorah in particular was a fan favorite.

It’s pretty unreasonable to argue they weren’t significant deaths.

The legendary Dothraki are wiped out in less than a minute, and fricking Pod is alive after a couple weeks of sword training.
