Can war movies from pre-1970 really stand up to anything done with better technology
*Actually it's a simile

Agreed. Great movie.

I couldn't agree with this more.
Even the cold weather movie part. I absolutely love this movie and watch it at least once a year.

Richard Burton and Clint. Damn fine pair. "Broadsword calling Danny Boy". Always think of that line when I think of that movie.

Just FWIW, you have Dirty Dozen and Great Escape on your list. I can't fathom how any technological upgrades could make either of those movies even slightly better than they are in their current state. The Great Escape is one of my favorite movies and I think holds up very very well.

Kelly's Heroes. Released in 1970

quote:I disagree with this. Yes, you need a good story to make a good movie, but movies like Sands of Iwo Jima and To Hell and Back do nothing to capture the grittiness of war like Saving Private Ryan and even Das Boot.
Explosions aren't what make great war movies. It's the story.
Stalag 17 and Bridge on the River Kwai are great movies, but more because of the interpersonal battles and conflicts between the individuals and not so much because of the horror that is war.
