Really? So not liking Paul Blart makes me pretentious?
No, not that in particular. It's just how you came off.
And most people I know not only like TBL, but fricking ADORE it. That's why I think it's overrated. It didn't make a lot of money in theaters, but that's not the only gauge. Like I said, Office Space didn't do shite in theaters, but I think we'd all agree that it's pretty highly "rated" in terms of comedies.
Also, if it's ranked as the 155th best movie on IMDb, then I'd say that it's a bit overrated just based on that. If that's a rank of just comedies, then it makes more sense.

If this was your first time watching it, I advise you to watch it again. The Big Lebowski is a film that when you watch it the first time you just think "What the frick did I just watch"? On second viewing it is a much more enjoyable movie and it gets better every time you watch it. That is a sign of a great comedy: one that gets better with repeated viewings.
This.
Wasn't funny on the first view for me either.
I love arguments like these...me not liking a movie (or not thinking it is funny) is not usually a sign that the movie is good (or funny). Why should a movie you don't like the first time around get the benefit of another viewing?
I'm not disagreeing that some comedies get better every time, but they are movies that you generally liked the first time you saw it. If you have to watch something multiple times before it is good or funny, then odds are it's just not good or funny.

Forget it, Donny, you're out of your element.

Eh, I was just agreeing with the "Not funny the first time part," not necessarily that it is "a great comedy," (which I don't think it is, above average? yes. Great? Not really).

Sounds like a new thread to me. I didn't think Citizen Kane was great the first time I saw it either (was probably a little too young). But now I do. And I had to force myself to rewatch it, because my first impression was: boring.
But does that detract from its "greatness?"

Because you're stupid and don't understand it!!

or maybe it is underrated by you. Really, I don't give a frick about your opinion so why should you give a frick about other people's? I think its a great movie and you not liking it isn't going make not want to watch it anymore.

I think so, or at least to a degree it should.
Granted, there are exceptions to everything. But for the most part, a movie that sucked the first time you saw it, well...sucks. A good example of this is Napoleon Dynamite. I've never seen it, so I won't judge its shittiness as a movie. But almost everybody I've talked to that saw it said that I had to watch it multiple times in order for it to be great/funny. Sorry, but I'm just not buying that argument.
The only movie I can think of that's close to this for me is Super Troopers. The first time I saw it, I liked it, but thought it was just moderately funny. But now it's one of my favorite comedies. But even still, I did like it and laugh at it the first go round. If I watched something that was bad, I wouldn't want to watch it again.
I feel like this makes a TON more sense in my head than in my posts...

i agree with this.
for super troopers (and I feel the same way about TBL) there are so many little things that you miss the first time and once you get to know the characters after watchin it a couple of times then the things they do get funnier and funnier to me.

I really don't think any or at least many people are arguing that Lebowski sucked on the first viewing.
I think many are saying that they enjoyed it more on repeat viewings.
As Beeltejuice said "I've seen the Exorcist about 167 times and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it."

I agree that most movies produced by Hollywood are garbage, but your statement smacks of pretention. Not everything produced by Hollywood is trash (just most of it). Likewise plenty of indie/foreign films are absolute shite.
I think it's safe to say that at LEAST 80% of truly great movies/films these days are foreign/indies.
If a movie is not playing at Canal Place I will pretty much not see it until it's on Netflix instant.

it was only released on dvd in the beginning and not VHS because they wanted to make it harder for younger kids to have access to it.

I get exactly what you are saying and I totally agree. It's like whe you meet somebody who is an a-hole. Then a mutual friend says "Well, you have to get to know him better". My reply is always ths same: Why would I want to get to know this a-hole better?
Same thing.

Oh, and BTW, I like TBL alot. I own the DVD. I thought that it was funny the first time I saw it. However, this movie is very overrated. Especially on this board.
It has nothing to do with box office numbers or imdb rankings. I know plenty of movie buffs who act as if this movie is the funniest thing ever. It is not. It's entertaining and funny. But there are many better.

If you are not going to go with a broad definition of overrated, then of course it can be overrated. EVERY SINGLE MOVIE EVER MADE, would fit the term of overrated by some people. I am sure Ed Wood thought his movies were just amazing.
In broad terms, looking at box office numbers and other rankings, the movie it not overrated.
Are there some people that over rate the movie? Yes, but as I said every single movie every made, no matter how bad the movie was, had someone that loved the movie.
If you narrow it down to a few people, then yes I am sure there are people that rate the movie higher than it should be.
Do you think Land of the Lost is overrated? I don't. The movie has made no money, and had been reviled by most reviewers.
Oh wait, some people on this board loved it, so it must be overrated.
