After 20 years of being here, I'm sure they made some kind of breakthrough in translation...I don't think they ever explained it, but that's the conclusion I came to.

Loved it. Not what I was expecting and had high expectations and was very satisfied with it.

Serious response to the cat food, I like how that fed into the whole, "They're animals" theme. How cat food isn't really "cat" food, its just what we serve to them as pets, yet when a species comes from who knows where and they are desolate and wanting cat food so bad, it just makes the humans look down on them further, that the prawns are just animals.

I thought the whole movie was very smart, esp for it being "just a sci-fi" flick

Most of these questions were explained after the movie. What happened is the Prawns have a hive like mind structure that is controlled by a Queen. The Queen died somewhere around Earth, so the Prawns didn't know what the hell to do, so they had to land somewhere to survive. And I'm guessing Christopher was a little bit smarter than most the Prawns and was eventually able to adapt to the non-hive like mind that he was accustomed to.

The aliens had been there for 25 years. By then they surely learned how to communicate with them and vice versa.

Actually, the cat food was supposed to symbolize cocaine

Not saying you're wrong, but this is another interpretation from imdb.com in the trivia section...
quote:
The idea of the prawns being obsessed with cat food came from two inspirations. In impoverished areas of Johannesburg, Neill Blomkamp would see people selling cheese poofs and other snack foods out of large 3-foot tall bags and wanted the aliens to have a similar cheap food. The decision to make them cat food came from one of the producers who used canned cat food to bait hooks when fishing for prawns in Vancouver.

I recognized the fact they were pretty much addicted to the stuff, what I was getting at was this was just another reason to look down on the Prawns. For crying out loud they're eating cat food!

The alien weaponry was bad arse. That one gun that shot out a lightning bolt that totally destroyed everything it touched was awesome! Also that robot at the end was amazing.
