im not 100% certain, but i believe they decided to end the show with 3 seasons of 16 episodes, instead of 2 seasons of 24, and then the writers strike shortened season 4 to only 14

Only 16 were scheduled. Then after the strike they only got the OK for 5 more, then split the finale in 2.

Ok, Ben is this good guy who doesn't kill innocent people yet he kills the army guy with the heart rate monitor and when Locke tells him he killed everyone on the boat he said "so". All he had to do was knock him out and tie him up.

I disagree, it was a completely Linus thing to do. He always thought he was in control and tried to use mind games to manipulate people, but this time someone had the balls to call his bluff.
