This is a stupid idea.
From a marketing perspective if you are gonna make a football show it makes sense to use a successful brand name like FNL to bring in a bigger audience to try to get the show off the ground.

Remake will be total garbage
It isn't a remake, it's a reboot. It will just be Texas football show #2. It will not follow the Friday night lights storylines.

No coach Taylor and no Connie Britton, no care

Nothing is sacred. Nothing of quality can be left in the past where it belongs. We must dreg up the corpses of anything that has marketing value. Crush any creativity because hollywood execs still think this is a good idea and will make money when all attempts have been crashing and burning the more they do this.
I love it!

This doesn't affect the old show. That show is done.
This is another adaptation of the book.
Much like there have been countless different iterations of the wizard of Oz with Wicked being the latest
If they were bringing back Chandler and Britton and trying to continue that story 10 years down the road I'd agree with you

Look man I’m cool with having rich cultural IPs that we allow people to be iterated on and brought to all forms of media. This should be something special though. If everything is worth continuously bringing back even when literally no one asked for it then nothing matters

Sounds like a terrible idea.
Not really. As football changes, so do the stories. It may still fail, but there is good material there for them to work with.

it's slated to have a new cast still set in the world of high school football.
So, absolutely nothing relating to the original aside from the name?
This reminds of of "True Detective" Season 4. I hate this trend of taking some completely new and separate thing and slapping a different name on it to draw in viewers that like the original thing.
If it's just some run of the mill show about high school football players just call it something else.

Is this a new trend?
Seems like basic marketing, especially in an era where it's hard to find an audience for a new show with all the streaming options and how people consume TV shows these days.
I understand why a fan would want a new show to have a different name, but it doesn't make any sense marketing wise when the goal is to capture a big audience/make money.
The Twilght Zone has been rebooted under the same name 3 times, the first reboot being in 1985

Kinda like what they did when they made Friday Night Lights into a tv show.

For this to be an accurate modern reboot, the show needs to be set at an exurban 5,000 student DFW high school with a $100MM stadium and an offense that throws the ball 80 times per game.

Currently reading the book, had no clue it focused so much on racism

Yeah the movie tones it down except for the dinner party scene. Billingsley's character was the big winner in that tone down.

I’ll be honest, I’m pretty pissed that they are going to ruin one of my favorite shows
I don't agree with what was linked in the OP that "fans have been clamoring for a remake". No, they really haven't.
But if they did, why would this ruin the original? It still exists and you can enjoy it just as much as you always have. The new one will most likely suck and make people appreciate the original more anyway.

Connie likes endless wars, pedophiles, open borders, abortions and a shitty economy. No thanks.
