Gladiator 2: Rhinoceros Boogaloo
Posted on 7/9/24 at 11:38 am to Esquire
Honestly there is enough interesting real history going on in Rome at this time that if they stick to telling a sensationalized story rooted very very losely in real historical people/events of the time it’ll be hard for this movie not to be good.
I mean just the fact that the Antonine Constitution was passed in this time will make it easy to tell a slave striving for freedom story with added interest.
Plus you have Caracalla murdering Geta, all the crazy shite that Caracalla and Geta allegedly did, Germanic invasions ramping up, Crisis of the Third Century looming.
They’ve got plenty of history to weave into a really good movie, that said it won’t be as good as the first that’s nearly impossible to do.

No issues with Denzel being in the movie. But he had that classic Denzel voice in one of the trailer scenes
“All right! I’m putting casus on all you canises!”

Compared to the original, this one looks silly. Considering where the world's at today, seems about right.

They actually did have water battles in the Colosseum.
I don't know about riding Rhinos though.

Honestly, this looks way better than I wanted it to.

I thought it looked good but Denzel stuck out so bad. He felt like Denzel in every other role.

Looks okay but it doesn’t have the gravitas of the original at all
It’s just a popcorn movie

With Gladiator being one of my top 5 movies I almost don't even want to watch it knowing I will probably be disappointed.

I love how we went from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard making one the beautiful film scores with Roman-esque/Mediterranean elements in it, to music by urban poet Jay Z for a Gladiator 2 trailer.
quote:
Scene: "release the lion"
Sound track: "I woke up in a new bugatti"
quote:
Maximus- what we do in life echoes in eternity
Denzel- I’m going burn this motherf#*king Colosseum down
quote:
Great choice of music….. All that’s missing is Dom Toretto drifting round the Colosseum in a modified chariot
quote:
Denzel: “I’m putting cases on all you Nero’s!”
from youtube comments--sums it up.
I don't know what I was expecting from Denzel, but it wasn't this. His mannerisms, personality, speech is just off. I expected something more grizzled, slower and deliberate with his lines—a wise former champion, ya know, like Proximo. Not Denzel from the south side of Chicago
It really does feel like a fast and the furious movie

Urban music has become so tiresome. I have no clue how anyone enjoys it.

I like Pedro Pascal a lot, but I really wish he would change up his look every now and then. He's had the same shaggy hairstyle (give or take an inch) and the same mustache in everything I've ever seen him in. Only difference was in Last of Us they spray painted it gray.

They needed to have Denzel be Mam on Fire Roman version Denzel, not zaney Denzel.

That’s exactly right, this just looks corny

Well....that was extremely disappointing and its not about what people knee jerk reaction is either. The original gladiator had a shite trailer too but it turn out to be awesome.
No my disappointment is that Lucius the little boy aka Haley Joel Osman grew up to be an evil tyrant like Commodus. They character assassinated him and made him effeminate. That sucks.
Second, the guy they got to play the new Maximus does not have the charisma or star power to draw us in. He look out of place and maybe it was the way it was shot, but his intense screaming seem looked weak. Russel Crowe entire gristle appearance drew you in and seeing him there you can see that he is the main character.
Here, Denzel Washington outshines the actual Main Star Galdiator. What's worse, when Pedro Pascal was in the arena, he looked more like the main character than the new dude.
Also base on the spoilers, I think the new main dude might be Maximus son who survived or a bastard of maximus.
Also the guy who said the Roman never fought naval battles there. The roman as a people at the time were masters engineers. Their feat could not be replicated until the modern day. Some of the shite they did if you try to replicate now by hand is all but impossible for the current day people.

Well good news you are wrong.
Lucius is played by Paul mescal.. the new "Maximus" is already known to be him
quote:
Oscar nominee Paul Mescal plays Lucius, the nephew of former Emperor Commodus and son of Lucilla, although he is unaware of his royal lineage. In the 2000 film, Lucius was played by Spencer Treat Clark and here, a fateful turn of events finds him becoming a gladiator like his childhood hero, Maximus.
