Another plus, the stories were pretty dark for Saturday morning kids fare. They were repeats when I saw them. They were super dark for 64-65 when they originally aired.

Correct; there was an entire "flashback" episode dedicated to tell the story of how that happened-- Calcutta Adventure.
Also, there is ONE episode that takes place without Hadji, before he became part of the team.
That one is Mystery of the Lizard Men, which takes place in the Sargasso Sea amidst a bunch of old seaweed-strewn sailing ships, and is most noted for the scene where Race and Jonny jump their hydrofoil and crash onto the bad guys' boat (seen in the credits sequence).
