I completely disagree. The movie would have to be four hours plus to do justice to the book.

There will be one story in two movies.

This is the only way to cover the details of the book, plus add the extra time of the white council, necromancer, etc...
We just have to sit back and put our trust in Peter Jackson.

BTW, the trailer is a perfect teaser that didn't reveal too much just yet. And hopefully we only see a little bit of smaug in the trailers for the second movie.

I might have to wait and torrent this one, just on principle. If money is the only reason this is being done (and it clearly is), I'm not contributing.

You can't take life this serious can you?

The LOTR was a single story as written by Tolkien.
The publishers broke it into 3 books against his wishes.

The Hobbit can be expanded upon safely, and make 2 full movies easily. I would even say perhaps 3 if expanded enough, and there's tons of material to effectively do so.

Has anyone thought about how the dialog between Bilbo and Smaug will look in the movie? In the book, their conversation was pretty detailed.

I think Peter Jackson did a good job with the talking trees in LOTR:TT.

Benedict Cumberbatch is already cast as Smaug.
As well as the Necromancer.

Voice, as well as possible motion capture stuff.

Go see it on the big screen.

I agree it is a money grab...
Right! And besides, what movie is not a money grab? The weekly box office numbers surely confirm that reality. This at least, has some literary merit along with special effects and entertainment value.

Yeah I know I just thought it was funny how if you read the Hobbit then LOTR you find out the Necromancer was Sauron, Gandalf really is an idiot

I believe Gandalf knew, he just presented that name for the dwarves and Bilbo's benefit.

I didn't know sauron was called that. I would be so happy if he would be in the hobbit

Yes. In fact, if a TV show I'm watching pisses me off, I make a note to boycott all of its advertisers.

That'll frickin' show 'em.

Didn't read the OP, did you?

The Hobbit is, as I remember, shorter than any of the LOTR books. Not comparable.

Many.

God, humanity is doomed. I meet more and more people every day who seem to think they've come to some epiphany by "realizing" that all human motives are superficial. They aren't. It's just you and the rest of the cynics.
