Almost everybody that has commented has read the books. I haven't. I'm guessing that has something to do with it..

I have only read the Hobbit, and it was back in school. I don't think the Hobbit trilogy cane even be compared to the LOTR. They're not in the same ballpark.

Also, as far as the action is concerned, a lot of the Hobbit movies' action scenes needed a Benny Hill song in the background to truly portray what we were watching.

LOTR by far is better. My main gripe with the Hobbit is there wasn't much connection with a lot of the characters. In LOTR every character that was part of the fellowship was important to the audience. In the Hobbit I can barely remember 2 of the dwarves names. Everyone else has already talked about the other major flaws in the Hobbit.

Having read these books (and other works by Tolkien) before seeing the movies, it's really hard to discuss the differences with a non-reader. No offense, but I just don't think you are getting the true gist of the stories if you go by PJ's vision.

The LOTR films are great, but the further in we go, the more he deviates from the books. A few things worth pointing out (because, in my opinion, they change not only the story, but also the character involved... and a person's character is very important in Tolkien's works):

Gandalf and Aragorn discuss whether to go through Moria in Fellowship. The point of view is reversed in the books- Gandalf wants to go there, Aragorn doesn't. Aragorn fears what may be waiting.
Also in Fellowship, there is a lot more to the addition of Merry and Pippin to the group. They (and others of his friends) become aware of the danger he is in, and conspire to aide him, without his knowledge.
Finally, there is the deleted Old Forest/Bombadil parts. Not enough time to go into all that, although I do love the theories that Bombadil is either Eru or yet another villain...

Two Towers has a lot more additions and changes, and not as much deletions. Eomer is never banished, and interestingly enough they again reverse Gandalf's point of view- in the books, Gandalf says go to Helm's Deep, Theoden wants to ride out and make battle in the open field. There are no Elves at Helm's Deep, but there should later be Huorns.
Other side of the river, Faramir never even considers bringing the Ring to his father, because he knows what it is and what it can do. That's an enormous part of Faramir's character that is changed, for the worse. And what's more, the Ring of the books would not allow Faramir to reverse his decision; once you are tempted, you are trapped.

In ROTK, in the books there is a nice paragraph written, about Aragorn's strength of will and power of command, and how Sauron was right to fear him. It addresses his command of the Army of the Dead, and how if he chose to be a fearful ruler like Sauron, he could have kept the Dead as soldiers to command. It is a testament to his essential goodness that he DOESN'T use the Dead, something Sauron would not be able to comprehend, because he lacks that goodness... in the movie Aragorn DOES use the Dead. In other words, he uses the weapons of terror that book Aragorn rejects as evil, and that most of the book's theme is treating that way. Aragorn's character is diminished in the movies, that way. Because basically the books say there is only one right way, and all others lead to darkness... if he would use the Dead, he would use the Ring; and if he uses the Ring all is lost.
