but if Elaine's character was someone else and we were never introduced to JLD, the show wouldn't suffer.

So, basically you're saying she's not spongeworthy.

JLD is the only cast member to go on to win multiple Emmy awards on multiple series. It's obvious at this point that the writing on Seinfeld is what made the cast look like the Chicago Bulls of comedy. JLD was the one who also had acting talent.

So now Jason Alexander doesn't have acting talent? I mean for cripes sake.

she carried Seinfeld
Well, I'm on episode 3 of season 4. She has yet to make an appearance this season and guess what? The show is still fantastic. Yes she's talented. I think the show is better because of her, but I could say that about all of the cast. Each character is cast perfectly. That's what makes a great show. I hate when people say someone "carries" a show. It's not a great show without a great ensemble, IMO.

Agreed. Also, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus is incredible in Veep that too is a very well-written show. Which is no surprise, because it's by the guy who made The Thick of It in the UK, which was nothing less than the greatest political satire show I'm familiar with. (In fact, Veep started off as a spinoff of that show, but the pilot was a failure and HBO invited Armando Iannucci to make something new.)

Nevermind that in his case there was a patient NBC executive willing to give his struggling show two years and a much stronger lead-in (Cheers) to find its audience.

i remember watching it starting with the second episode and worrying it was going to get cancelled. I used to check the Nielson ratings that came out once per week in the Times Picayune.

Totally lucked into it. Didn't hurt that I was in undergrad when it started and the dating do's and don'ts hit so close to home.

Originally Jerry Stiller wasn't George's dad. It was some bald gray haired guy that died mid series. I can't find the video's with him because they refilmed them with Stiller as the dad.

And I disagree with the criticism of season 2. It had George's heart attack, Jerry and Elaine trying to lay ground rules to just be physical, the chinese restaurant, and the one where Jerry's two heads are playing chess over a woman.

The original old man Costanza: LINK

Jerry's dad was originally different too. I don't believe they reshot this because I've always known it this way. LINK

And I've got nothing against Season 2. When I described it as "rough" I meant in terms of commercial success and because I do believe they were still perfecting the show. There are classic episodes in that first batch.

He hasn't had near the success that JLD has. Not even close.

Jason Alexander is a top shelf Broadway talent.

You can have success in acting in other arenas than network TV

Michael Richards was brilliant as well. He was really great at physical comedy.

The episode where George turns blue is the most un-seinfeld episode of seinfeld.

The difference being that JLD has succeeded in everything that she's tried since Seinfeld, while Alexander had two huge bombs for TV series.

And his Broadway success was at the start of Seinfeld. He's been in three plays since Seinfeld went off the air and he was the replacement in two of them. The third was doing The Odd Couple in L.A.

I love JLD, but she's also pretty easy on the eyes.

It's great from here on out. Seasons 1 and 2 were by far the weakest.

i was scanning thru youtube and saw mentions of Seinfeld reunion. Not the movie coming out but reunion shows. I saw bits of episodes? where George invented an i phone app and became a millionaire and Elaine had a child by Jerry. I've never heard of these?

Am I right in assuming that George Castanza's character is based on Larry David? They have somewhat of a resemblance, especially in his younger days:

I might have to agree with this statement.

Yes. Jason Alexander has said that he was doing a Larry David impression when he was playing George.
