Watched it tonight. Pretty garbage. President just chilling in the oval office at the end haha

I would not say that it is journalist-as-a-hero, but it is the story of a small group of journalists and pretty much seen from their eyes.
There is not much gun play, battle scenes or outright war, but there is some.
There is not much Left vs Right or political diatribe (some viewers are thankful of this, but some viewers want to see their side kick-arse in the movie). It's pretty interesting, but I don't consider it a traditional war movie.

I just finished watching it. I enjoyed it; more than I thought I would going in. There is virtually zero politics in it; it is never said what any one side was for. There were no super villains (except maybe the mass grave guys) and there were no heroes. The fighting scenes were good. It’s a good watch IMO.

I watched it last night. I didn’t get the sense it’s woke. There’s no real political ideology assigned to any of the three warring factions.
The setting is very intriguing but ultimately the story is weak. There’s no real payoff. It’s really a coming of age story set against the backdrop of a civil war.

The main takeaway for me was that Cailee Spaeny is adorable.

I just watched it streaming on Max and thought it was excellent. Tons to unpack in this movies on the horrors of war and the inhuman nature of these journalists.

It was good but not rewatchable if that makes sense.

That’s why the movie is so vague about how the war started. All we know is that the president is in a third term and has been bombing Americans. We know there’s factions consisting of Texas and Cali, loyalist states, the Florida Alliance, some states with connections to China, and the government. They probably did this so people don’t see it as super political and instead of focus more so on what war has done to America and its citizens

So the night I started the thread, I went to watch it. Thought it was better they left it vague. My opinion, sadly, is that another American civil war will be much more grim than depicted in the film.

Probably Garland’s worst movie but still ok

There was an early comment from a protester in a news clip about "water rights".
Still vague but that's about the only thing that would explain California and Texas joining forces against the federal government. Those are dry states that depend on water management/relocation for drinking water and crop irrigation. I would imagine people would throw out political loyalties and social niceties when it comes to dying of thirst/hunger.

I enjoyed the movie but why did she just stand there when she knocked the girl out of the way

We already saw the shooter at the end of the hall. I think what we saw took place in less than a second. Time was slowed down for affect.
Now that said, a dive tackle would have been preferred but I also think Kirsten Dunst's character was tired of living.
I want to pretend she's just a grizzled version of Torrance Shipman from Bring it On

I guess that would make sense. I figured it was slowed down but not that much.

Not a very diverse movie to show real America
