It’s made very clear that Ben has rabies. If you pay attention over the opening credits, they say that Ben is the most intelligent chimp ever seen. He was raised by a scientist who was a linguistics specialist as pretty much a member of the family.

Dude, the characters were the worst part. So much setup and little payoff. Look, I love horror movies but these characters were the dumbest I’ve seen in many years. Beyond that, the amount of plot armor from our final girl was just beyond belief. I do agree, the score ruled.

What kind of payoff did you want? More kills? Any more and it would've crossed over into parody.

It’s chekhov’s gun. They introduced things that went nowhere. I’ll give you an example. The heart locket she and her best friend had. It was a layup to use those as some sort of weapon or something in their multiple interactions with the deranged chimp. But nope. Nothing. No pay off. Or how about how our final girl just bolting down the stairs leaving her friend to get bludgeoned to death? Or how about our final girl also getting bludgeoned multiple times by the chimp yet somehow not a scratch on her? Even the father who was deaf, there was a host of things they could have done there as well. Just a beautiful setup with very very little payoff.
It’s a good premise. It’s a good score. There are parts I liked. The opening scene, the dudes’ scene, but the movie itself sadly did not explore what it created with any veracity.

True, but that happens in just about every horror movie. That, and people making stupid decisions, but if they didn't, the plot could not advance. What I was curious about was the possibility that Ben had been experimented on somehow by the scientist wife, or perhaps abused in some way. The director decided not to go down that road and stuck with the rabies explanation ala Cujo.

I never got the impression that the heart necklace would be used as a weapon. I guess it's because my niece and her friend each have something similar. I just took it at face value that it was a sign of the girls' friendship.

Lucy didn't have blood all over her at the end? I do agree that Ben beat the shite out of her during the final confrontation, so I thought she would've been more seriously injured. He did break her hand though.
It wasn't perfect, but I thought it was fun.

The chimp smashed her face in the living room. No damage. Is the chimp strong or isn’t he? Yes, her wrist was broken and then immediately she swings a shovel like a baseball bat and is hoisted up by her wrists from her father. Is her wrist broken or isn’t it?
Her sister gets bit and is pouring out blood, but later, moving around on it like nothing happened. No freakouts, no “oh my god she’s going to die unless I get help”? Motivation was sorely lacking. It just wasn’t very good man, I don’t know what to tell you. It was a cool setup and then fell flat, much like the boy toy as he fell to his death.
If you introduce a connection, best friends, etc. you don’t just later leave them behind. I get that horror characters are not the smartest, that’s fine, but the motivation is important. You could have even had the monkey rip the necklace off and taunt her with it. Something, anything. Again, it’s introducing a gun and then not using it. A cardinal sin.

That’s precisely what it failed at. For a film about a killer monkey, it did not want to be fun at all. The only part where the film met the tone was when the two boners roll up at the house looking to get laid and instead get ripped apart. That’s when the film shined. Or the opening scene in the chimp’s cage. If the film just stuck with that tone, you would have had a fun movie.

Yea, I was going to say a grizzly, but it's not important. They'll all gladly kill you and eat your organs.

Chimps are very strong and unpredictable, so it doesn’t require possession or infection. Just a pissed off chimp will do the trick…

Apparently it's true that when chimps attack, they go for the face, which Ben does in this movie, and it leads to some gruesome deaths.
