As for the debate behind who has been in the cabin, it was clearly Jacob being protected from Smokie by living in the ring of ash. I believe this is confirmed because Ilana and crew go there in search of Jacob. It makes no sense as to why you would think anything else.
I realize that once the ash was broken that smokie/MIB could have/did live there but since Ilana and crew were suprised to see the ash ring broken, there should be no debate what the ash was for: to keep Smokie away from Jacob, not to contain MIB/Smokie.
Jacob doesn't need protection from the Monster since the Monster can't directly harm him. Plus if he was that threatened by the Monster, why not have alot of ash around the statue and around his chamber? And the encounter with "Jacob" in the cabin doesn't match Jacob's personality. And its been brought up recently, so I think the writers intend to answer what exactly happened.

missed that, do you recall roughly what episode that was around?

no, but he had just told them to go to the Temple, I thought
As we learned, the Others have been in other places besides the Temple. I don't think they would continue to follow Ben's orders after he's been exiled.

that's a leap I'm not 100% you're correct on- I dont know that you're not, just think it's a little shaky assumption
I'm working on confirming this.

I think the alternate timelines will re-converge and we will discover things like Jack is the reason Locke can walk again, etc.

has anyone ever thought of the notion that Locked died in the crash? and from the moment he woke up, he was someone else?
i mean, i know it's really far fetched and doesn't make much sense (especially judging by his reaction when he woke up and had the use of his legs)...but still.
i'm just so confused now after the "flash sideways"

I think that might be a little far-fetched but you never know with this series. I did initially think that Locke was evil during the first part of Season 1. Remember Claire's dream where Locke has one white eye and one black eye...what did he say again?...I remember it being pretty freaky.
Edit: found it
CLAIRE: What's happening?
Locke in Claire's dream
LOCKE: You know what's happening.
CLAIRE: But I don't understand. Why --?
LOCKE: He was your responsibility but you gave him away, Claire. Everyone pays the price now.
What did he mean when he said "everyone pays the price now"?

People cite information from the first 3 episodes for this, but almost every single episode from that point forward directly contradicts this. Plus if you needed 100% proof, MIB did say he admired Locke because he was the only person on the Island who didn't want to leave and saw how pathetic his life off of the Island really was.

Something interesting I noticed after watching Part 2 again. The last scene where the Templars (only nickname I could come up with) ask to speak with Jack in private, Miles is sitting next to Hurley when he gets a weird look on his face. Hurley asks him what happened and he says, "Nothing." But you can clearly tell he's puzzled. We know Miles can hear the dead's thoughts and sort of talk with them. Judging by the surprise on his face, I think it's safe to say that Sayid is not Sayid. That is, it's Jacob or some other dead person. I think.

Miles knows something.
I also want to know what the "Templars" wanted to talk to Jack about.

the surprise on his face was that Miles literally sensed "nothing"
his answer was not "nothing's wrong" but rather "I sense nothing" - which I'm sure perplexed the shite out of Miles, since he's used to hearing dead souls

I am really leaning Desmond the more I think about it.

I was thinking about how sayid may be Jacob reincarnated and how some argue that Jacob wouldn't ask what is happening. What if Jacob doesn't want anyone to know it's him yet. Doesn't want to show his cards?

Not necessarily, he could be puzzled that he doesn't sense Sayid is dead like he normally would.
(as stated above)

The alternate timeline and the island being under water is the result of the outcome of the battle between MIB and dead jacob, sayid, and losties in the current timeline.
So pretty much, I think the writers are showing us what happens to the characters after the battle b/w jacob and MIB--which changes the past and creates this alternate timeline.
I agree. I think we are seeing one story. We're just watching it back and forth out of order.
i.e., If the final story is 100 days long, the losties on the island would represent days 1-50, starting at day 1. the losties on the plane represent days 51-100, starting on 51.
So, I think that they aren't really alternate realities. We are just seeing what will eventually happen later to the losties on the island.

would it be reversed?
2004 plane LAX 1-50, then 51-100 Mib 2007?(dunno)
but that means that the island would have to have dried out....I guess it's possible in 3 years, but trees exposed to salt water for any significant amount of time will die, and they wouldn't grow that fast in 3 years.....high enough for Kate to be hanging from one.

nah, he's saying that the "on the island" timeline is taking place in the technical past and the battle that is going to take place will be so epic, the island will sink
THEN
The losties wouldn't have crashed on the island so we get to see how everything would've played out if they never crashed....but a lot of things that happened on island still happen off island(Locke's legs fixed, Charlie almost dies but is saved by Jack, Kate gets herpes from Sawyer)

i'm sorry maybe I'm drunk, but are you saying,
A) the Nuke ended everything, they never crash, and the mib/jacob thing is a what would have happened if it all played out?
B) the nuke only moved the losties forward through time to 2007 for mib/jacob battle "so epic" that it sinks island and sends them all (island included) back through time to 2004 so they land in LAX.
C) the nuke split off 2 realities that will converge later. Losties don't crash 815 from Sydney, but "fate" brings them together in Los Angeles and they crash on the island on Flight 316 a few years later (except Hugo's empty seats are filled) and the "reality we are seeing" in 2007 is actually "what has and is happening"?
